After a confi night sleep, Sam and I make our way to dolphin encounter Kaikoura and we are excited to hear that sea conditions are improving. After a cafe breakfast on site, we done our wetsuits and watch the safety video that only builds our excitement. After a quick busride, we board a small vessel that is still on dry land! It slips gracefully into the water behind the tractor and we are off! Sadly, over the next two and a half hour, we see only a few scared dolphins who are not interested in us swimming with them :(. Because...our boat becomes the centre of attention for a dozen or more orca or killerwhales. So much so, that even the boat crew refers to it as the best day ever. You should see my photos!
The weather is almost perfect, but despite this the dolphins continue to stay away. So a refund is issued as we did not swim, but I will try again on Monday before heading to Picton;
In the afternoon we spot seals, a beautiful coastline and enjoy a wonderful drive north.
We then enter the Marlborough wine trail in our zippy little blue Toyota Corolla. Finding our place for the night is a pleasant surprise, so we cap it off with a cheese bord and a nice local drop of white wine and even squeeze in a game of tennis before dark (which is won by tennis champion Saskia Clijsters)
