A nice sleep in today before we ask our hosts to arrange some bikes for us. Armed with a Marlborough Wine Trail map, we head off to our first and most famous winery of the day: Cloudy Bay. A stunning setting with some nice relaxing chairs which we make good use of, however the wine tasting itself is a bit of a disappointment to both of us... Oh well, off to the next one in that case: Allan Scott's family seems to be a pleasant surprise! Cycling down the same road, we hear that their son opened Moa's brewery, and we decide there is nothing wrong with mixing a bit of beer into our wine tasting day. The beer seems to have quite some similarities to the Belgian beers so this is yet another pleasant surprise.
We are having a nice relaxed day cycling through the vineyards and stopping for another four wine tastings, some of them being entirely free (while tasting about 10 different wines; this is what life is about ;-) ). Our last tasting is in a small boutique vineyard which is owned by people from Timaru; Sam gets to meet his mother's hairdresser which results in a Timaru catch-up.
Time to drive back to Kaikoura as tomorrow will be an earlier than early start: Sam will get up at 3h45 to drive back to Christchurch for work at 7h00, and I will give the dolphin swimming another try.
First pizza and best one in quite a while in Kaikoura centre before we go to bed
