The adventures of Sarah & Brian
Hi,
It's been so long we can't remember what the hell we've done! OK, I think we're at new year.....stayed on Magnetic Island, lovely small island with secluded beaches. New year's eve was a fairly quiet one, got very drunk obviously but like Christmas, the Ozzies just don't aren't bothered and were about as excited as a stick.
Ran into some of the people we spent Christmas with which was a good excuse to go drinking again.
Walked to one of the beaches you can't reach by road on new years eve but couldn't go in the sea 'cos it's stinger (deadly box jellyfish) season. New year's day had to get up early as it was far too hot to lie in a tent, and spent the day comatose in a hammock at the campsite, dribbling. Day after managed to move our lazy asses and we went on a trek to spot koalas - saw 5 of the beauties, one was even moving which is a major rarity. Also saw a colony of tiny bats in one of the old buildings, they were so CUTE. When we got right up close to them, one started dive bombing us - not very scary though as they're only about 3 inches long.
At the campsite/hostel you could feed the rainbow lorikeets (small parrots) every day, it's like the pigeons in trafalgar square but with much prettier birds. There was loads of wildlife at the campsite - possums appeared every night to try to nick your food, and saw a few wallabies.
After that we went on a 3 day 2 night cruise to the Whitsunday islands. Some great snorkling on the reefs - and finally saw a shark! A white tipped reef shark, about a metre long. The water was also full of jellyfish, but apparently harmless ones, still kept our distance though, they're mingin'.
We slept on one of the islands and at night it was all a bit 18 - 30s with drinking games and dancing to YMCA. Good fun though. Brian got stupidly wrecked again and I found him asleep on the stairs out side our room, then later on the bathroom floor. Determined not to sleep in a bed for some reason!
We've got a bus pass and there's only one service a day, and it arrived in our next destination at 3.30am - Bundaberg, where we stopped for one day then left at 3.30 the next morning. That was harsh, felt more jetlagged than when we flew here.
The stop off was to go see a turtle breeding ground and was well worth it. We saw a huge loggerhead turtle who'd just dragged herself up the beach to lay eggs. We watched her struggle back down to the sea and to add to the atmosphere there was a huge electrical storm lighting her up on the way down. Got ruddy soaked though. Also got to see baby ones hatching and coming out of the sand. They bought one round for you to poke, gorgeous things, then they all struggled their way down the beach. Only one in 1000 survives to breeding age, which is about 30 years old, poor little mites.
After that we went to Fraser Island, a large sand island, just on a day trip and Brian went on a scenic flight in a toy plane (I did it last time I went - wasn't chickening out!). Saw a shipwreck and swam in a gorgeous lake with white sandy beaches.
From there to our current destination - Maroochdore. It's a nothing town but near to Australia Zoo which we went to today. Home to the original croc botherer - Steve Irwin, and yes he was there! Wooooooo He had a bad knee but hobbled out to the Crocoseum, at Croc O'Clock to compere the Crocs Alive! show. Mrs Irwin was there too, but no baby dangling. Got to feed kangaroos and stroke a koala and snake. BBQ at the hostel tonight then leaving for Sydney tommorrow - a 2 day bus journey, stopping for a few hours kip on the way. Will be back in touch there.
Love Sar n Bri
