I've just got back from Prague(or praha as it's spelt in czech) and i've had an amazing couple of days! I flew out on monday and met up with 3 of my Canadian friends who had been there since the previous day. From the bus ride to the metro line i was slightly worried about what i had let myself in for,as it seemed a very poor,non-descript country. Luckily once i had gotten over the confusion of the metro lines and getting lost trying to find my hostel, i found prague to be a beautiful city. I checked into my hostel which was a bit prison like from the outside, as there was a caged door which you have to shout through to get the staff to open it for you. We were staying in a 12 bed dorm which i had been apprehensive about, but it was great, it was divided into 2 rooms and there was also an upper level. The room was big and light so i was really pleased with it. But there was a strange girl who was CONSTANTLY in the room, she never left during the day it was really odd.
I met up with the girls and we headed to Wenscelas square and the surrounding area to do some shopping. I spent most of my money that afternoon. We went to a nice little restaurant which was in the basement and was quite cave like, but it was good and cheap so we enjoyed it. We went back to the hostel and got ready to go out as we had heard that the nightlife in prague was really good. We finally found this club called roxy that was supposedly THE best club in Prague and had won European awards or something. Well let me tell you, it was not good, so if your ever in prague, don't go! It was really seedy, everyone was stoned. So we stayed for one drink and headed out. We bumped into these 3 guys on the street, 2 were canadian (one from the same place as my friend) and one English guy, who actually came from solihull and knew someone that i knew which was cool! So we went to a club after much deliberation as the nightlife was dead as it was a monday, even though the bouncer told us we should go to the 'titty bar'. How classy eh? The guys were staying at a friends apartment so we went back there for a drink and ended up leaving at about 4 am. It was soo cold walking back to the hostel!
We got back to the hostel to find the beds that had been empty, now full with naked guys. They had got back just before us and were still awake and it turns out they were french.
So the next morning when we finally woke up, we were starving and went and got pizza before going on a bus tour of prague (we were not up to a walking one!). So the bus arrived and we put on our head sets and adjusted them to english, and had a monotone, boring, recorded guy telling us about prague. The weather had been nice but then got very cold and started raining. The last stop on the bus was to Prague castle where we had 30 minutes to look around before the bus left. We looked around the area but couldn't find the castle, so jen bless her, went up to some guy and asked where Prague castle was. The guy was like, well this is it. It had taken us ages to get to that area and we had to run back to the coach absolutely drenched from the rain, just as it was about to leave without us! So we went back and showered at the hostel and got ready to go out for dinner (mcdonalds!). The french guys turned up as they had obviously been out all day as well ,there were about 6 or 7 of them i think. So we went out to dinner bought some alcohol as the guys wanted to have a drink with us before they went out.
We got back and started playing 'i have never.......' with them and a german couple who were also there. We got rather drunk and found out a lot about each other! We went to a bar with them but it was dead so we came back to the hostel. Lets just say that the girls got quite friendly with the guys and the room wasn't that quiet that night!
The next morning we awoke with hangovers and realised that we had overslept our check-out time. So we got everything together and left and took the metro to the airport. However, we got stopped by what we thought were officials asking to see our tickets. It turns out they weren't valid for some reason and they took our passports and said they wanted 30 francs (czech equivalent) from each of us. Luckily one of the girls managed to cover it for all of us, and we grabbed our passports and left. We were quite shaken up by it afterwards and it was very intimidating. In hindsight we reckon we were scammed. So that put a downer on the trip.
Overall,it was a good trip, just ruined by the metro fraud, but i dont think i will be going back!
