This was my first travelling trip outside of Switzerland, and i was soo excited about the prospect of going to Hungary. Thanks to an easyjet sale we got really cheap flights, which was great as i don't think i would ever have thought of going to Budapest otherwise. I went with my American friend Erika, and we stayed at the house of her aunt's friend. The family really were amazing people who did everything they could to give us advice and make us welcome. We arrived late on friday night, and were treated to a drive around the city which was beautiful. We woke early and eager the next morning and navigated our way around the public transport to where we would be meeting our walking tour guide. Our group was a mix of aussie's, american's and i was the sole brit. Our tour guide was really friendly and helpful and showed us everything we wanted to see in 3 hours. We went to saint stephens basilica where we saw his actual hand in a box (quite disturbing actually), the opera house, heroes square and Budapest castle and old town. We went for a meal which was amazing quality yet soo cheap! We walked around the walking street of budapest and did some shopping as per usual!
The next day we headed straight to the 'house of terror' which was a musuem dedicated to WW2 and was where the germans had their headquarters and actually housed and killed the jews. It was a very somber but insightful visit and made me learn and reflect a lot on that devastating time. Afterwards we returned to Heroes square as we were both really taken by it. We went to the musuem of fine arts and then made our way back to the house as we were taking a taxi from there to the airport. I was really sad to be leaving as i loved budapest, hopefully i'll be able to return one day!
