So, this was the trip i was most nervous about, as i was going solo. I decided to go to barcelona alone, as i needed to prove to myself and everyone else that i can travel independently. And i proved myself right, i didn't get mugged once! I hadn't really planned what i was going to be doing at all, having decided to see what happens. My flight arrived late on the friday night and i caught a bus to Placa catalunya. I was meant to be meeting a friend of a friend that night for a drink. I got really lost trying to find my hostel and started stressing out about being out late, alone in an unfamiliar city, and also that it was getting late to meet the friend. So as all independant travellers do when they get lost... i took a taxi. The hostel was a huge building on la ramblas and was full of people when i arrived. Cutting a long story short, there was a lot of confusion with keys and linen at the hostel which ended up with me being annoyed me and exchausted after having climbed 5 flights of stairs 4 times. I rung the friend of a friend and i arranged to meet him, again i took a taxi as i was not in the mood to get out a map and search. I was really relieved when i met him as he seemed a really nice guy and we got on well.We went for a couple of drinks and walked through some of the places where i would be going the next day. We took a taxi and said goodnight and i headed to my hostel. I was the first one back and it was 1 am. Needless to say i was woken up 3 times by people coming in at different times and because the noise from outside was ridiculosuly loud.
The following morning i woke up and tried to think in a positive way and forget about my night of disturbed sleep. I put my sunglasses on and headed outside. My face fell when i saw that instead of the sunshine i was expecting, it was pissing it down. And i hadn't brought an umbrella. I walked down la ramblas and found a nice cafe where i had a pain au chocolat and a tea. I caught the metro and bought a 2 day pass which was really worth buying, and headed to the aquarium. The aquarium was a really fun place and relaxed me a lot. I took lots of photos of the fish and the sharks for the boys and bought them gifts at the shop. I went to la sagrada familia afterwards which was a stunning building and really did leave me speechless (which you all know is not easily done!) I paid to go inside which wasn't as great as i had hoped, but i was glad to have seen it. After much gazing at the building i went to mcdonalds for lunch and then rang the friend. I still hadnt bought an umbrella so my hair was huge and frizzy, not attractive! We went to his friend's party at a club that night which was fun, i met a great french canadian guy who i had a laugh with.
The next day the weather was thankfully a lot better. I went to Parc guell which was a really fun place to go to. It was quite modern and very quirky, and i spent a good few hours there, walking around everything there was to see. I went back to la ramblas to do some shopping but realised that everything was shut as it was sunday. So i got some lunch and went and saw all the street entertainers perform.
I went back to get my backpack and then i headed to the airport. I really want to go back to Barcelona some time soon as i didn't get to see as much as i would have liked to,but what i did see made me feel very cultured!
