Trinidad and Tobago
Following an uncomfortable night - talk about sweat - we must get fans! we had a slow start jet lag and heat taking its toll. We ventured in to Mount Hope Hospital (we are housed at the back) which is air conditioned thank the gods! to find where we sould go on monday. Then we had a trip to the next town (village) we got a maxi for 20p (a little mini bus) to St Josephs as it was sunday most everything was closed and the streets quite quiet however, we still attracted unwanted attention! men shouting and beeping of many car horns, but we do stand out a little!!!!!!!
The walk down the streets of shops and shacks nearly killed me - so hot - not to mention the interesting drainage system! luckily we found an air conditioned eating place and I cooled off.
There are two other students from Sheffield who should be here but their luggage got lost (can you imagine?) and we've not seen them yet as they stayed some place else.
We got invited for dinner with a group of german interns downstairs, they come over for 4 months and work as unpaid house officers (3 jobs in 12 months then go back and sit finals to qualify making their course 6 years long). So we got some tips of where to go and who to ring about accomodation for weekends away. We sampled the golden rum and fruit punch (thats how the Trini's drink it) which is not bad at all.
Its not safe here to be out after dark and it gets dark early at 6.30pm. You can pop to the supermarket but must get a cab there and have them wait for you to take you back. I dont remember reading any of this before I chose it as an elective spot!!!!
