After I met some people in my hostel, Barcelona was a lot of fun. We went out around the port, I tried Absinthe (85%), met a bartender that had lived in Brooklyn, danced a lot, and we jumped in the Meditarranean at 5am. We had put our money back in the hostel since there's so much theft, and put our shoes and some clothes under a big stack of beach lounge chairs. By the time we walked the 30 feet to the water and looked back at our stuff within a minute of leaving it, three guys were going through our pile. I couldn't believe how quickly they came, out of nowhere and totally quietly. We ran back up yelling at them and they scattered -- good thing we didn't have anything worth taking.
Now I'm with my parents on the south coast of French (in hotels with sheets!) and we spent Saturday walking around St. Tropez because I just wanted to see it. The people-watching was the best so far and the yachts were ridiculous. We're staying in a little port town called Ville-franche near Nice. My family knows no French, and when we checked into our hotel my dad couldn't figure out how to say 'I'll be right back,' and in his flustered-ness he said it in English with a ridiculous French accent. He was like Inspector Cluseau in the Pink Panther. I couldn't stop laughing and this is probably all why the French don't like us. So he's not allowed to talk anymore in this country.
Today we went to Monaco and walked around Monte Carlo, also because I just wanted to see this place. The cars we saw we're amazing, and there were huge yachts in this port as well. We saw the Prince of Monaco leaving his palace, his guards were in a Lexus and he was in a Prius. We watched the changing of the guards, which they do daily. It's not quite up to the level of the changing of the guards at the British royal palace. I think half the guards were over 60. Apparently there are more people in the Monte Carlo orchestra than in their army. I wanted to see the aquarium, which was actually really cool especially for how small it was. The views from up on the hill where the palace and aquarium were amazing and you can look down at all the big yachts and sailboats, and the course of the Grand Prix. The popular spot to be was obviously the casinio, where after a certain time in the evening you have to enter with suit and tie and they will rent you a tux for 40 euros if you're not up to dress code. Everything on the streets around the casino was either a designer store or a bank. The rest of 'downtown' was literally just expensive restaurants, car showrooms, real estate or yachting offices, and more banks.
