Sarah J's Fully Sick Travel Page
Hey everyone!
On Friday the 1st of April I went on a day trip to Warwick castle, Stratford-upon-Avon and Oxford. I had a really good day...the only bad thing was the tour guide liked the sound of her own voice and I didn't like her accent. Nonetheless, Warwick castle is beautiful, I even climbed the 530 steps to the top of guy's tower for a nice view and a good photo opportunity.
Stratford is the town where Shakespear was born and I got to go through his 15th century house. Stratford is a cute little town.
On our way to Oxford we passed through Woodstock, which is where my Nixon and Hastings ancestors are from, some of the houses there still have thatched roofs. Oxford university is unique, not only is it the oldest in England, but it's still college based- there are 39 colleges that make up oxford uni. I went to see christchurch college, and stood on the steps where Harry Potter was filmed, I also saw the great hall that was the inspiration for the one in the movie.
On Saturday I got up early and headed for the Portobello road markets, it was awesome...seeing all the stalls fill the streets, heaps of antiques for sale as well as new stuff.
I then went to the British museum...I don't know how they can call it 'british' as I didn't see anything from Brittain there. They did have a great Egyptian mummy exhibition though.
Then I went to the London Eye...it's pretty much a giant ferris wheel that towers over London and takes half an hour to do a full circle. It was a spectacular view...you can see 26km on a clear day.
Then I went to the Theatre to see Mary Poppins...it was brilliant, if it ever comes to Sydney I'd recommend everyone go see it. The live orcherstra makes it even better.
On Sunday I went to church and ended up seeing 3 sessions of conference, 2 of those sessions were live. I met some girls from BYU who are on a study abroad program in London- they are the coolest. They shared there lunch and dinner with me, I came unprepared because I didn't know they were showing conference that day!
On monday I went to Harrod's...the famous shopping store...it was very posh. There were even toilet attendants directing you to a toilet that was available.
On Tuesday I did the seven and a half hour coach ride to Falmouth which is in Cornwall. It's very, very green here. Falmouth is on the coast...and has a "beach", though in Australia it wouldn't really be considered a beach as there wasn't any waves.
On Wednesday I headed out to Trebah and Glendurgan gardens...they were beautiful. The bus drivers worry me a bit here...the roads are extremely narrow, so naturally I thought they'd be one way...but I was wrong after finding out after a near head-on collision.
On Thursday I headed to the Eden Project...I had to go by bus which took 2 hours, but worth it as the Eden project was the highlight of my trip to Cornwall and the main reason I came here. There is two biomes...temperate and tropical, it was truly inspiring seeing plants collected from all parts of the world (including NSW) on display for everyone to appreciate. It was also nice to be in the warm biomes, as it was a freezing day outside. I would've stayed to see some of the outside displays if the weather wasn't so crap.
I was feeling a bit homesick...in fact alot homesick, so I decided to go stay with my cousin in Manchester for a while...as I found out it's not easy travelling on your own, it can get lonely at times! But not to worry, i'll be in Manchester soon enough.
Miss you all,
Sarah.
