Sarah J's Fully Sick Travel Page
Hey there,
Ok this postcard is under 'Belgium' because there wasn't an option for Luxembourg...poor little Luxembourg, people are always forgetting it.
For those of you who don't know anything about Luxembourg, its a very small country nestled between France, Germany and Belgium. Their 3 official languages are french, german and letzenburgish. The country is only about 100km long and 70 km wide and it's capitol city has a popultion os 82 000.
Alrighty, now you've had the low-down I can tell you about my day.
Chad, my air force buddy from Idaho, Jeff, exchange student from California and I went on a day trip to Luxembourg city on 11th June.
We set off from Chad's house just after 6:30am...we set off early because even Autobahns can get clogged up early, and we arrived in Luxembourg around 8:30am.
After finding parking, we headed to a bakery for breakfast...you can't beat a chocolate crossaint for breakfast.
Then we wandered down to the main square in the city and bought some postcards, had a look around the antique markets...I even spotted some Australian coins for sale, of all the places!
We took a look at the palace, and the guard that marched back and forth- gun in hand, he looked pretty serious and we were going to try and see if he would crack a smile, but the gun was pretty big so we decided against it.
We headed through an old part of town through narrow cobbelstoned alley ways to the case mates. These case mates are a series of very, very old tunnel-like cave things. They date back to 938, I really don't know what the purpose was for them, but we went down some very steep stairwells and some spooky, dark, dank passageways...lucky I always carry my torch...you never know when things like that will come in handy (I am my mother's daughter). Jeff was game enough to crawl into what looked like a dis-used sarcophagus and posed for some photos.
I found out that these passageways used to be a part of the castle, but the castle isn't really standing anymore...I think it may be safe to say that this is the first castle in Europe that somehow metamorphisized into a bridge. But a very nice bridge.
As we were in the casemates, we were enjoying the view into a beautiful valley, with a church and town below with a river running through it, and its all very green and pretty...then Jeff spots a rather tall pile of brightly coloured buckets down below...pretty random.
We then had a little 'nanna nap' in the park, the late night and early morning started to hit us.
We then found a place that was serving chocolate crepes for lunch, so we were all for that. After lunch we checked out this awesome valley that we caught a glimpse of before. It was gorgeous, there are so many trees that Luxembourg feels more like a park than a city, there are beautiful bridges...you'll just have to wait till I get pics on here to see what i'm talking about.
We then ventured down into the valley/park for a stroll, it sure beats Hyde Park or any other park i've seen in a city...it's just so tranquil, the type of place you could lay down on the grass and have peaceful nap.
We then made our way back to the car and left Luxembourg, and then headed to the air force base in Ramstein. Once on the base we played a game of bowling then had dinner at Chili's restaraunt which was lots of fun.
We were pretty tired after speeding home on the autobahn....actually thats kind of an oxymoron, since there is no speed limit on most parts.
Luxembourg is beautiful and I enjoyed the country and the company.
TTFN- ta ta for now.
Sarah.
