Sarah J's Fully Sick Travel Page
Well I have certainly experienced the best and worst of travelling thus far!
On Thursday Matt and I headed out early to Sentosa Island by cable car (suspended 90m above sea level)...this Island is largely a tacky touristy area, but I wanted to see the Butterfly park and Insect Kingdom. So I went there while Matt headed to Underwater world...it really was a facsinating place. The butterfly avery was beautiful, with hundred's of butterflies everywhere, and one of the care-takers even let me hold some giant scorpians while he took my picture...luckily the scorpians liked me and didn't sting.
Then we headed out to the Changi prison museum and chaple, this was a very moving experience to see what the men and women of Australia went through in the fight against the Japanese in WW2. The museum was very tastefull in presenting the Australian story how it was, yet maintaining respect for the Japanese.
After a busy morning, we got some lunch...I had a Thai dish, I don't know what it was exactly but it was spicy, like everything else here.
We spent the latter part of the afternoon wandering around the Zoo, the Singapore zoo is supost to be in the top 3 zoos in the world, but i'm not sure what the other ones are. I think the Chimpanzee's were my favourite, they are very fun, playful creatures...and also the Orangutan's were beautiful. We ended up meeting 3 other people from the hostel and started heading back there for dinner together.
I didn't have much of an appettite, as thats when I started feeling sick. I was hoping I would feel better in the morning, as Matt and I were planning a day trip to Malaysia, but I felt worse...I was weak and couldn't walk very well and everytime I stood up I felt like throwing up. In the early afternoon one of the staff members helped me walk to the doctors where she gave me an anti-biotic, and she said that if I wasn't hospitalised I was to see her again at 7:00pm. She was worried it may have been my appendix, but personally I think it was either food poisoning or that my western stomach couldn't handle some of the food i've been eating. So after lots of prayers, rest, water and medicine I was finally feeling better that night. As it turns out 4 others in the hostel had the same thing I did.
This morning I was feeling better again and made my way to church, I turned up at a mandarin speaking ward...and then was given directions to the English speaking ward by some members. So I ended up at Singapore first ward, which mainly consisted of Americans, with some British, Aussies and Kiwis. I happend to meet some people I know from back home (it's a small world after all), the Davidson's from Tamworth. I also met some Aussies visiting from Sydney (Baulkham hills ward) who thought I looked familiar (I reckon they thought I was Kristen :-).
Anyway I leave tonight for London, so i'll head to the airport around 8:30pm. Happy Easter to you all!
Best Wishes,
Sarah
