Sarah J's Fully Sick Travel Page
Hey Everyone!
I arrived safe and sound in Singapore on Wednesday night. It was very hard saying goodbye to family and friends at the airport, I didn't cry too much though! I met a nice Austrian guy who calmed my nerves a bit, he works in the Natural History museum in London, so I might catch up with him there.
The flight took 8 long hours, I was on a British Airways plane which was good as all the seats have the individual screens with 18 channels to watch...but i'm so glad I broke up my trip!
So I got to my hostel ok, it's very comfortable and clean and very good value for money.
On Thursday morning I woke up at 6:00am (I was still on Sydney time), and I thought i'd go to the Botanic gardens for a wander, but I found out that one of the hostel managers was taking some people on a tree top nature walk, so I thought i'd join in. I met Matt a fellow aussie from Adelaide, Tristan from Auckland and Collette from Ireland...and Dieter the hostel guy, and the 5 of us ended up walking 15km around MacRitchie reserve, we got to the tree-top part everntually which was good...the bridge was suspended 30m in the air and had beautiful views.
We even came accross a family of monkies on the way back...they're funny creatures.
When we made it back to civilisation, we went to get some authentic indian for lunch (actually everything is authentic here, our western concept of asian food is very narrow), and I even got to eat with my right hand! The meal was huge and only cost $1.80...in Singapore it seems there is at least 10 places to eat for every person here.
After lunch we went back to the hostel and another shower was in order, it is very humid here, but when I was on the sunshine coast it was just as humid there. Then Matt and I made our way to the CBD and the famous Raffles hotel (I had never heard of it before I started researching things to do in Singapore), it's just one of those things you have to see, very classy and below the hotel is shops like Louis Vittion and Rolex.
Then Matt and I headed down Orchid Rd which is the main shopping district...and it really is unbelievable and overwhelming how many shopping centres there are...there is twice as many shops as there are places to eat!
We then headed for the hostel and I went on a night Safari which was great, the animals are awesome, I'll probably go to the zoo tomorrow.
Another thing I love about Singapore is the taxi drivers! They are the coolest, i'd come here just to chat to the cabbies.
Anywho that sums up my first day here, i'll write another postcard soon!
Love and miss you all.
