What an amazing few days!!!
In summary about... 91 farms, with 158 stiles and 476 gates. Thousands of sheep, hundreds of cows, a handful of horses 5 B&B's and 3 rivers, 46 bridges, too much eggs and bacon and NO BLISTERS, all in 84 miles.
It's been tough in places but today was easy going. David, who I met coming out of Grassington with Elaine and Caroline, was also stopping at Crook Howe last night. He'd got lost again getting there and didn't arrive until after dark. This morning we set off together and I left him at Burneside. The route was easy; well labeled and relatively flat, both of which I was grateful for.
I crossed a field full of bullocks (young bulls.) Same as the cows situation yesterday, they all came to meet me as I entered the field then crowded at the other gate on exit so I struggled to get by. I wasn't worried this time, was a little more authoritative shoeing them away. Put them right in their place!
Had a cold drink and a flapjack in a dry barn that a kind farmer had set out for walkers. Bought 2 little bottles of home made damson gin and put a £10 note in the honesty tin... Then realised that he'd struggle to get it out as it wasn't something you could take the lid off... I wrote in the visitor book so he knew to look for it. Oops!
On the approach to the crest of every hill in the last 3 miles I was eagerly expecting to see the lake appear on the horizon. This went on until the last 1/4 of a mile when I finally saw it peeping through the trees. When I came to the finishing seat I felt so proud. Proud of my own two feet for carrying me there, but also proud of everyone who has shown their support over the last few days. Your words of encouragement really made a difference! I rang my grandad and he told me he was proud and that my Nanna would have been also, I truly hope so.
So now I sit, having supped a lovely cider, on the banks of lake Windermere. The sun beaming down on me like a big pat on the back, contemplating taking a rowing boat and where to eat my tea.
Thanks to my mums excellent organisation skills she'll not be here for another 2 hours. Plenty of time for another beverage. She'll be here in time to put me to bed! (only kidding, love you mum)
Thanks for reading. I hope you enjoyed my journey almost as much as I did. At some point I'll upload a video too.
There's still time to sponsor my non blisters at: http://www.justgiving.com/sarahwalk84
