We decided to take the ferry from Victoria to Port Angeles then get a bus to Seattle rather than doing the annoying trip back to Vancouver where the greyhound went from. This still took a while but was a lot better and we saw some amazing sights on the ferry over. We arrived in Seattle at 4.15pm and checked into our very nice hotel. We chilled out all afternoon then had a takeaway and watched a film. Next morning we walked to the famous Pikes Place market which was really cool, especially watching the famous fish throwers! Next we found a sports bar for James to watch the England game while I went shopping!!! I returned to the bar after the match and we had a nice lunch there. Later that afternoon we walked to see the Space Needle and the experience music project building which has amazing architecture. We then walked to the waterfront via the Olympic Sculpture Park which was really cool. We then walked all along the waterfront and watched the sunset which was really lovely.
The next day we took the greyhound to San Francisco which was not a very pleasant journey. Some really really weird people were on it and it was stupidly noisy, including some annoying girl doing some spontaneous rapping at 3am!!! Anyway, we survived and got the San Francisco at 12pm the next day. We found our hostel and had an unexpected free upgrade to a private room which was nice. We had some lunch in a diner and then walked around Union Square and Chinatown.
The next day we had to get up early to catch our ferry to Alcatraz. We took the famous cable car to Fishermans Wharf then had to do a bit of a sprint to the pier but we made it! Alcatraz was really cool, they give you an audio guide which is a guided tour of the prison narrated by an ex-prison guard. It was done really well and we also got an unexpected tour of the hospital which is not usually open to the public. That was really interesting and we even got to see the Birdman's private cell where he spent 11 years and Al Capones room too! After getting the ferry back over we walked down Pier 39 which has loads of shops on it and there are also loads of seals which sunbathe just off the pier.We then went to retro arcades on Pier 45 which were really cool then had a little look at a military ship and a submarine. We then walked along the beachfront and there were loads of people sunbathing and in the sea as it was Labor Day and the weather was amazingly hot! We walked up Fort Mason and then got the bus to the Golden Gate bridge and we walked along it, even James did it! As it was such a lovely day we had an amazing view of San Francisco. Next we got the bus back and walked up a massive hill to walk down Lombard Street which is nicknamed the 'crookedest street' which was cool. We walked back to Fisherman's Wharf and had some calamari, shrimp and calm chowder on the harbour then we took the streetcar back to the hostel.
Next morning we checked out of our hostel and went to a few shops before walking to see the Transamerica building. We then walked through Chinatown before getting a bus to a suburb recommended by everyone to us called Haight and Ashbury. It is a suburb with a hippy, 60s feel and lots of vintage shops. It was really cool and James put up with me going in nearly every shop! We then took the bus to Alamo Square to take a picture of 'Postcard Row' which is a row of Victorian Houses with the San Francisco skyline in the background! We then went back to Chinatown and found a really really cheap bar where James watched the England under 21 game while I went back into town for more shopping! We had some Thai food and some drinks in the bar before heading to the greyhound station for another overnight journey!
