It's a shame that we are only seeing Santiago in Chile but given our limited time in South America we didn't have any other option.
To be honest there really isn't that much to do in Santiago and after seeing the most part of the city in a day we were stuck for things to do. So we opted for a wine tasting tour. This was a really good day out! Not only because we got to taste the wine (although this was the main reason) but was good to learn about the history of Chilean wines and how they are made. As it was out of season the vines were dying off which was a bit of a shame, but still got to taste some grapes and it was surprising how sweet the Cabernet Sauvignon grape was. The smell from the fermenting wines was really overpowering and could nearly have got drunk off this alone! In the first vineyard we tasted Carmenere, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. The carmenere is a grape that is only grown in Chile now and had a really original taste. At the next one we tasted a cabernet sauvignon which had been voted 4th best wine in the world which was very impressive and even Sam enjoyed this after never liking red wine before.
Other than that not a lot to do here, but think there is a lot more to see outside of the capital just a shame we didn't get to see it.
