Well its a week into my trip and I have already seen so much already.
We arrived on Wednesday 11th April pretty shattered from about 30 hours of travelling so it was straight to bed. After we had recovered slightly we headed from the town we were stayin in called Barranco just outside of Lima. We talk a walk along the coast to the next town along Miraflores which is closer to lima city centre. The coast was amazing the beaches were nice ands the water looked wonderful its amazing that there were not many people around as it was so wonderful and in many places you ould imagine it being over run by tourism as it is a perfect location. Unfortunately due to our colouring being so fair skinned and blonde haired we attracted quite a lot of attention on the walk and got beeped at by pretty much every male driver tha passed - however this would be something we would have to get used to.
Miraflores was a nice town bigger and much more going on than Barranco where we were staying. We didn't really know what was there though and unfortunately missed out on a shopping centre with big glass windows overlooking the coast.
Next day we went to the main plaza in lima and did a bit of sight seeing, visited the Cathedral and Spanish Inquisition museum - pretty standard stuff really.
On Friday we took an overnight 14 hour bus journey to Arequipa - a town south of Lima. The route talk us along the coast mainly and when I woke up the morning was surprised to be faced with a cliff edge as the roads are so close to the edge - quite scary really!
In Arequipa we saw pleanty - the Monesariop de Catalina, a nunnery over 400 years old which still has about 30 serving nuns there. An ice mummy - a girl who had been sacrificed by the incas to their gods and buried high up a mountain. The body was recently found in amazing condition - many teeth still in tact and preserved at a museum. The last ouple of days we spent t Colta Canyon, was good to see but the tour was a little tedious as we had to stop off to see so many llamas and alpaca along the way. We went to some hot springs and then saw some traditional Peruvian dancing and music in the evening though which was a pretty cool experience. The next morning was an early start to see the Condors in the canyon they were pretty amazing, some flying right over our heads.
Today we aren't upto much just waiting til 8pm when we get a bus to Cusco and from there we'll go on to do the Inca trails (well we're actually gonna be lame and get the train upto machu picchu) so looking forward to that. I'm sure I'll have pleanty to write about after that!
So far have tried a few Peruvian things - Pisco the national drink which is fairly disgusting! and Alpaca which didn't really taste of that much really - still haven't been persuaded into trying the guinea pig though!
