This has been the longest day! About 36 hours long, and 30 of those were just this morning. Housemate#1 took a record time to bathe and dress this morning. Despite her 'na na na' protestations at the suggestion of a weekend by the sea she did a good impression of someone excited at the prospect this morning.
Well and truly in holiday mode, I made us all spaghetti on toast for breakfast.
Quite a tight time schedule today: leave home for Rochester at 12, walk to bakers to buy lunch, eat lunch, housemates art class 1-3, meet vikki then head to Hastings.
By now it's 10 am I am still in my pj's and I haven't packed myself yet. Both housemates are packed, breakfasted and ready for the off.... I explain we have 2 hours before we need to leave for college. In the time it took me to attend my ablutions there were footsteps up and down the stairs at least 6 times, in the time it took to pack my bag a further 4 times. It seems our housemates were taking it in turns to check on my progress. I did wonder if they thought maybe I had snuck out if the house and they had been left behind, especially as vikki had already left for work over an hour ago.
11.15 by now it doesn't matter which room I'm in I am joined first by housemate #1 followed soon by housemate#2. It must have been so irritating for them as I randomly visit every room in the house, closing windows turning off plugs gathering phone chargers, packs of cards, scarves, flip flops, bin bags... You know all those things you do at the last minute.... If you didn't write a to do list that is. Given we only decided to book this trip 3 days earlier there was no time for to do lists. I'm sure if it had been raining 3 days ago and not gloriously sunny and warm we would be tucked up at home right now rather than in our Deluxe 3! I will enlighten you as to the status of our holiday home tomorrow and slight mis representation in the title.
Anyway after half an hour or so of this weird contemporary dance, which at times bordered on 'contact improvisation', the three of us were performing around the house I decided to just leave early as I was becoming quite dizzy and worried that one of us might get hurt if it went on much longer.
Once in the familiar routine of bakers, lunch, college it felt like an almost normal day. Vikki mets us after class and we set off on our 1 1/2 hour journey to st Leonard's. Smug that we had left nice and early, even more smug that we chose down country rather than anywhere that necessitated m25 travel, smugness of smugville! In quiet parts of the journey I almost caught myself smiling and nodding, thinking 'oh yeah we did goooood'. Until an accident on the A21 reminded me what a fickle friend bank holiday travel could be. the a21 was closed just 20 minutes from our destination .... 2 hours later at 6.45pm we arrived at Combe Haven, not quite so smug as I was at 4.45..... What a stupid idea to book a weekend away at the start if half term and a bank holiday weekend!
Once unpacked and settled into our Deluxe 3 (damn this keypad ... No italic function)Quite hungry we set off to find sustenance.... We voted and curry won so we had to leave the park and head to Hastings... Driving like curb crawlers trawling for a tandoori grill or Ghurka cuisine we drove the entire st Leonard's prom and the most part of Hastings when vikki spotted the Bengal! Hah that'll do! So we parked in the old town and walked back along the prom. Vikki really is acting like she is on holiday here for the first time in her life; taking photos of seagulls, architecture, clouds, the sea, interesting installations (piles of daily debris that look like they might have been placed strategically rather than placed purposefully (sorry artist friends)). We seem to be walking almost as far back as St Leonard's. I'm sure it feels like that because by now I'm quite hungry... Our early departure from home and early to bakers meant we were eating our ham salad rolls before midday and by now it was 8.30 (3 hours later than housemate #2 usually starts looking at his watch and yawning if his dinner isn't on the table at home)
Ahhhh there it is vikki triumphantly proclaimed.... Ah it's a (closed) breakfast cafe! Not the Bengal .... The regal!
