After much searching as previously mentioned Mother and I had booked at B&B in akaroa a small peninsular town south of Christchurch and boy was the place stunning!
After many winding roads over very big hills, with sheer drops to the side (and much panicking by Mom and I over dads driving) we crested a hill and this beautiful bay opened up in front of us. Wow it really took your breath away. The B&B was also lovely but i wont gush about the decor and soft furnishings..
We booked a small boat cruise around the harbour.. there were 6 of us on the boat, it was like having a private charter, felt dead cool!!
The boat took us out from the harbour into the pacific, we saw blue penguins, seals and we were followed by hector dolphins (this is the only place they live and they are endangered, so it was pretty breathtaking all in all)
Steve decided we would swim with the dolphins the next day , so we booked another boat for the following morning . However i wasn't feeling well the next day, combination of "womens problems" and too much wine the night before so stayed on the boat and took photos of Steve looking silly in his wetsuit!
Steve: Silly I may have looked but I had a whale of a time with those pesky hector's dolphins. We ploughed through the sea and I am thinking, 'they're never goint to stay with us' once we sighted the first pod of dolphins..They do but you have to make an even bigger prat of yourself to make them stay with you...They are cute little critters (an irwinian phrase I believe) and they where within touching distance and were really inquisitive if you made really silly noises and clicked together some stones..I am belittling the experience a little here as after the initial cold and feeling a little silly calling into the water for the dolphins, to swim with them is a pleasure and a quite extraordinary experience..
That afternoon we headed out again around the penninsular in the car to other bays and coves (equally stunning and deserted) ending the day with wine tasting at a french vineyard (you will all realise that M&D have alcoholic tendancies before this holiday is over although they insist "they dont drink")
The next day we started driving south again to Dunedin so Dad could bring his Scottish roots to bear!
