Greetings from Koh Phangan. This will be a short post as we only spent a few days here. Koh Phangan is a much bigger island than we expected and the roads are crazy we cpuldnt believe the mopeds make it up the hills as they are literally vertical at many points. The few taxi rides we took...and when we say taxi we mean a pickup van with a bench in the outer back and no back door. So you can imagine us clinging on to the van for dear life as we were flying up and down the hills. The owner of our hostel was telling us how often he has to go and rescue people who have crashed and how thundreds of people die every year.
So we booked a hostel prior to arriving that was super cheap but had amazing reviews..we wete unsure if it was going to be ok as seemed too good to be true but in actual fact it really was great. Wee started off in a fan room which was fine but very hot but then got upgraded to the fancy villa air con rooms with a pool and for the same price...we were soo happy!! and the villa had 2 puppies so so cute!! we have photos so you can see, i named them Pierre and Penelope as the owner was french ha! Although there was nearly a horrific ending to our trip as Piierre followed us up the road to the main road when we were leaving and very nearly got hit by a huge van..he was so close me and vicki both screamed!! and it was all very dramatic for 6 in the morning!! but Pierre sirvived and we then had to run up the road to get the dogs back to the villa!!
So back to Koh Phangan. The main reason we were hete was of course to experience the Half Moon Party which is set in the jugle with a dj in a treehouse and everything is UV so everyone covers themself in UV paint and flurocesent clothing...good fun :-) Wee met up with our dutch friend who we met in Cambodia so we all had pre drinks together , we were drinking Sansum which is super cheap thai rum!! After pre drinks we went to the hostel bar for the pre party basically we payed about £6 and got free food body paint and cheap bucket cocktails...we had lots of bucket cocktails its the cheapest drink option as the buckets are only 2.50 pounds and super strong win win! The half moon party was amazing soo much fun there was a big group of us from the hostel and we spent the night dancing and drinking :-) some of the group tried the mushroom shakes (magic mushroom) we opted for buckets as that was plenty!! All in all it was a great night!
The rest of pur time here was spent lazing around at the pool and beach...we did get storms for the whole of the last day not good...all we could do was sit and eat and watch films in the hostel. We also found a very cool bbq all you can eat restaurant..well the thai version of bbq. Basically you get a fire and a dish with a mound in the middle then ypu choose youreat or fish and cook that on the mound and then around the sides of the dish ypu make a noodle soup with all the veg. Was really cheap and plenty of food including ice cream for desert...however the thais were laughing at us trying to make noodle soup as wewere chucking stuff everywhere and ended up with a mountain of veg!!
That pretty much sums up our time here. It was nice to relax on the beaches for a while but now were looking forward to hitting the cities :-) next stop is Kuala Lumpur Malaysia so after our 21 hour bus journey we will be in touch from there.
Lots of Love xxx
