Greetings from Singapore!
This will be our last post from Asia, can't believe it!! We took yet another overnight bus to from KL to Singapore however this journey was just 5 hours which seemed so fast compared to our usual 20 hours!! We arrived in Singapore at 5am so spent the morning in one of the many 'Hawkers' which is basically a street food cafe which is super cheap and has suprisingly good food! The hostel we booked was actually really nice, we get free breakfast which is unlimited toast and coffee and after 2 1/2 months of rice and noodles, toast is amazing!
On our first day in Singapore we went out to explore and headed to Marina Bay Sands which is a 5 star hotel that you can see pretty much all over Singapore beacause it is three towers with almost like a boat on top adjoining all three towers, quite an odd building but it is pretty impressive. Inside the hotel it is very swanky, all designer shops, none of which we even attempted to go into as we felt very under dressed in our scruffy travelling clothes!! I should point out here that the Singaporeans are all very smartly dressed, often over dressed, the women are always in posh dresses in heels no matter what time of day it is, so you can imagine how we feel strolling around in our shorts and t-shirts! We also found that they are quite rude like when they serve you and when you are asking for things, its a very small country and very money orientedv- by far the most expensive country in the whole of Asia so maybe thats why. Anyway so after exploring the hotel we went out to the 'Bay of Gardens' which surrounds the hotel and has lots of flowers and huge model tulips which apparently light up at night, we didnt get around to going back to see this at night. We finished the evening popping to Little India, we literally walked out the tube station and very quickly turned around and got back on the tube as this was not for us, It was soo busy and basically just a food market so in 30 degree heat it was a bit smelly so we passed on this. We then found a cheap Hawker cafe to eat dinner, the dinner was rice, chicken and beans and seemed nice at the time. However about an hour later we were wandering around the harbour and Vicki suddenly needed the toilet and had to run off. I thought id escaped this as i was fine but by the next morning i was in the same situation and spent the whole day at the zoo running to the toilet...clearly the food didnt agree with us!!!
Day two and we were up bright and early and off to the Singapore zoo. This was the main activity everyone we met told us to visit and it was well worth it, definetly one of our highlights of Asia. Its the Worlds first no caged zoo so the animals are able to roam freely but are carefully enclosed by using rivers, moats and different forms of vegetation to keep them within their zones. Its really cool beacuse you can get so close to all of the animals, some of which are completeley free to roam like the treetop monkeys. We spent the day wandering around the zoo and we also watch the elephants of Asia show which was based around the elephants relationship to their mahoots (the guys that look after them) its amazing what they can do and how they respond to everything the mahoots tell them to do. We got some photos of this so check them out, We also saw a sea lion show which was just as good!! Then in the evening we headed up the road to the Singapore Night Safari again where the animals are not caged but this time we got to see the nocturnal animals and what they get up to at night. For this there are some walking trails and also a tram that takes you deeper into the rainforest to see the elephants and other animals. It was interesting to see Asian animals, some are very strange looking like the naked mole rat and the tapir, weve got lots of photos so enjoy!!
The next day we met up with two Philipino friends that we met in KL. They have both been working in Singapore for a year and they offered to take us on a tour to see some sights. This was really good as we went to see the lion fountain at Fullerton and also got an amazing view of the marina bay sands...which we defiently wouldn't have found on our own. We also went to vivo city and sentosa island which is home to universal studios and lots of other attractions. We finished the day at Raffles for the original Singapore Sling which was actually lovely, probably because its gin based and we both love gin. We did feel a bit out of place when we first got there as again the hotel is so posh!! So we can now say we have tried the Singapore Sling and we liked it!!
Our final day in Singapore we decided to be kids and go to Universal Studios for some rides!! All the rides our based on the movies, our favourites were a Transformers 3D simulator ride, Battlestar Rollercoaster which is a bit like Americas duelling dragons where the two coasters interlink and The Mummy rollercoaster in the dark. We also stood out like a sore thumb all day as we decided to wear our fluroecsent half moon clothes hehe. On our way home we got grabbed by an Asian couple to pose for pictures with them!! Ha
That pretty much sums up our Asian adventure and time in Singaore. Next stop is the land down under which we are very veryy excited for!! Although it is going to be a bit of a shock going from 30 degree heat to 15 degrees!! Think we may need to invest in some warmer clothes :)
We will finish up with our highlights of Asia:
1) Scuba diving in Koh Tao, Thailand
2) Vietnam (all of it)
3) Trekking in Chiang Mai, Thailand
4) Petronas Towers, KL, Malaysia
5) Singapore Zoo & Night Safari
(We could go on but we will stop there!!)
Things we won't miss:
1) Rice/Noodles for breakfast - its just not normal
2) Hole in the floor toilets & having to use a bucket of water to flush it
3) The snorting and spitting that all Asians regularly do!!
Things we will miss:
1) How friendly Asian people are & being grabbed to pose for photos!!
2) How cheap everything is!!
3) The sunshine :)
4) Spring rolls & noodle dishes
5) Phrases 'what you waaanttt' 'where you frooomm' and 'sawadikaaa' which they sing to you 24/7
