Da Nang is used as a holiday resort by Vietnamese. It was refreshing to see an authentic Vietnamese town that hadn't been influenced by foreign tourism. There were no western restaurants in the town and the hotel restaurant served noodles and fish for breakfast, not what us westerners were looking for first thing in the morning!
There wasn't a whole to do in Da Nang so we were grateful we decided to spend an extra night in Hoi An rather than Da Nang. We went down to the beach and were the only people on it for mile; it was crazy we didn't know what was going on. So there the three of us were, with this whole beach to ourselves when the bright blue cloudless sky turned dark and ominous in a matter of minutes. When the fork lightning and thunderstorm started we had to make a run back to the hotel before it got any worse. Just as we got to our hotel it started to downpour, so we did what anybody would do, we stocked up on pringles and sweets from the bar and spent the rest of the afternoon watching English films.
Once the storm had passed there were clear blue skies again so we headed back to the beach... however this wasn't like the beach we had left. It was thronged with locals, who we later learnt avoided the sun during peak hours only to come out as it was setting. A strategy the three burnt Irish girls should have adopted, but sure it turned to tan so no harm done!
