This morning was an earlyish start as we wanted to rent the bikes and be on our way by 9am. Our plan was to cycle 18km along La Ruta de Las Cascadas, the route of the waterfalls. However, as I headed out for breakfast I saw that the weather was awful - it was raining heavily and very overcast. After meeting Jaclyn and checking the forecast we decided it was best to postpone until lunch time.
We sat out the rain in a small coffee shop. However, the bad weather was relentless and we soon realised that it was not going to improve anytime soon.
So instead, after lunch we went to look around the Basilica in town. This was really interesting as it is full of paintings that depict all the miracles that have happened in Baños. Jaclyn helped me translate all the Spanish. They included people healed of sicknesses, people surviving cars crashing down canyons, donkeys and horses falling off bridges and people escaping the many volcanic eruptions. I particularly enjoyed the paintings that accompanied the explanations, showing action shots of cables breaking on cable cars and horses in midair.
After the church, we ran through the rain to a spa we had seen the day before. We decided to treat ourselves to a full body massage, facial and pedicure for $30 each. It was very relaxing and even though I wasn't sold on the massage and facial, the pedicure was very good and both Jaclyn and I ended up leaving with funky multi-coloured leopard print toenails.
Later that night we met up again in the Stray Dog Brew Pub. Despite the gluten I thought it was a sin not to have a couple of tasters of the local brews. Both the pale ale and kolsch were very good. We shared a plate of cheesy chips and a BBQ pulled pork sandwich (very Chicago, so Jaclyn tells me) and had a lovely evening chatting. A very girly day - one best spent when I'm not with Andrew!
