Montañita and Puerto Lopez
After all this, the weather here in Montañita was overcast and cloudy. i got up and got ready for a walk along the beach. It is a great looking party and surf centre with a long sandy beach and a great setup right on the water. The town opens right up on the sand, with stalls in front of bars restaurants and hostels on the pedestrian roads. I looked around the shops and saw what the place was all about and thought (yes it did hurt a little). I wanted to come here to see the boobies (birds) and snorkel if I could. If I stayed here tonight, Friday night, I would likely write off today and tomorrow and I could have stayed in Baños to do that.
So I packed up and grabbed the Green bus to Puerto Lopez. After 15 minutes i met an American guy, Joel, who was traveling with his Ecuadorean wife (and her four sisters). We got talking and realized we both wanted to go snorkeling. When we arrived we found an agency and organize to snorkel and whale watch together. Turns out the women were not interested.
I checked into a hostel and got an empty room, although they told me more people would be in soon. To my surprise two female Dutch teachers around 28 years old entered to take the other two beds. They came with me to the agents to see if they might head to Isla Del Plata tomorrow as well.
I left them and headed out to the whales. The trip to the whales and watching them was interesting but both of us were more interested in snorkeling. Unfortunantly Joel was feeling very sick from the motion and spent most of the time leaning over the edge. The time came around and there were too few snorkels for everyone to snorkel so Joel jumped out (feeling sick and pissed off) and swam to the shore of the island. I enjoyed it for 15 minutes while he recovered and we swapped so we could both enjoy it. I went for a quick run along the shore up to a sleeping sea lion, hola.
Once I got back I had a quick shower and joined the Dutch girls for a beer on the beach and a burrito for dinner. One of the girls had had an allergic reaction to something so we picked up drugs at a pharmacy. On the way a frog jumped out onto my foot, at first I thought it was a rat, scared the s*** out of me. They returned to the room to take the drugs and put cream on and I headed back for a beer at the beach.
They came back and spoke about a bonfire down the beach and it seemed like a great night for a relax by a fire on the beach, very costal. We walked into near darkness, until the flickering of a fire was evident through the palm trees.
It turned out to be an American girls birthday and we sat around chatting, people from all over the world, mostly Ecuadoreans. The girls boyfriend had an I love boobies band which I had been looking for for ages. One of the Dutch girls spotted it, called it out and he gave it to me. Really nice guy.
The funnies part of the night was talking about translation mistakes. One of the girls (in the past) thought bonfire was bumfire, and another time she sounded like she was saying fisting when she was trying to say visiting. The phrase visiting your friend changes meaning, as does most things. A really funny night.
The room we had had no fly screen covers so the only way to cool it down was to use the mosquito nets and open the windows. These nets were not all that useful with holes big enough to pass a book out from the inside. The room looked like a weird little Indian house.
