The Great Escape
After receiving a couple of comments about our short commentaries, we may expand on them a little, but we still subscribe to the "less is more" camp in that section.
Temperature: 25-32 °C, cyclone "JIM", strong winds, horizontal rain, intersparsed with patches of burning sunshine.
Places visited: Innisfail, Townsville, Mission Beach, Airlie Beach, Capricorn caves Rockhampton, Yeppoon, Town of 1770.
Wildlife: Bats, Kangaroos, Jellyfish, Road kill.
Disappointments and Highlights: Its been a long trip down the East coast approx 2300km so far, through the driving rain, most of the beaches up north were off limits due to the jellyfish season. Finding our way through the very similar redneck northern towns, we arrived in Airlie beach to have our Whitsunday sailing trip on the racing Trimaran cancelled due to high winds. Moving on, we discovered some caves where this very enlightened young tour guide showed us around informing us about every possible fact on bat poo, and pretending we were in a big group even though there was only two of us. We found the first amazing steak in Rockhampton where they had a rodeo ring out the back of the hotel. Yeppoon was a stepping stone to Great Keppel Island but again being foiled by rain we made our way to the "non-existent" Town of 1770 (its more a collection of sparsely populated huts with a very nice beach).
Other: Vic Hislops Shark museum, learning about where thousands of "missing persons" really go.
Thoughts : Glad we had our rain coats.
