Arrived in Katherine on Sunday and stoked to find that our caravan site at Knotts Crossing Resort had an ensuite! Very glam indeed! Got set up and spent the arvo having a bit of a look around the town and checking out the local tourist info centre.
Got back to the caravan park and went to start the car later and....nothing! Are you kidding me? We tinkered around and scratched our heads before the guy at the next site came to lend a hand. Turns out he is a mechanic and found there was just a loose battery terminal, so "phew" no problems there. Had to crack a can to celebrate (and it was beer o'clock) and made plans for the next day.
Monday we drove out to Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) National Park. We walked the loop from the visitor centre, up to the lookout and back down through the valley. Unfortunately the other tracks were closed due to a bushfire in the area and the swimming area was closed due to renovations. We passed on the idea of hiring canoes as it would have cost $180 for the 4 of us! If I'm paying that much I don't want to do any of the work thank you, furthermore I would require all paddling to be done by a buff, shirtless man-slave while I relax and sip champagne!
Anyway, that option wasn't on the cards so we made our way to the Katherine Hot Springs and our kids (including the big kid) had heaps of fun with the local kids on the rope swing. Went back to the park completely exhausted and starving from all that exercise.
Spent our last day today in Katherine with a tour of the worlds biggest classroom, Katherine School of the Air. The KSA services an area of approx 800,000 km's at the top end of the NT and they also have a few overseas students. These people do an incredible job bringing education to kids in remote locations and we were lucky enough to see a lesson in progress.
After the KSA tour, Smiley decided to get a bit of a haircut. I left him at the hairdressers, walked back in after a few minutes and nearly fell over! All of his hair was gone! I'm still trying to decide if this was entirely necessary but I suppose we will save on shampoo for the rest of the trip and I guess I'll get used to it. We spent the rest of the day back at the hot springs. Some killjoy had removed the rope swing (boo!) but the kids decided to do front-flips off the mini-waterfall instead, so there was still a bit of danger to keep them happy!
Returned to camp and spent a while packing up, ready for a quick getaway in the morning. Tomorrow we hit Kununurra WA!
