Hooray, we made it to WA! Had a beautiful drive from Katherine, through to Victoria River Station (where I had the hugest choc-chip bikkie ever!). Made it to the WA border and had to line up at border security for ages as the Moscow Circus was ahead of us. Our border security officer was hungover and totally over all things circus and threatened to fine us if we mentioned anything about the circus! He was a bit of a character and turns out that he used to play gigs at Kokopellis, so knew Portland well. We were sent on our way and made it to beautiful Kununurra mid arvo and set up camp in some serious heat at Ivanhoe Village Caravan Resort. Luckily the beer was cold and the pool was too, so we were happy campers!
Spent our time in Kununurra exploring the Mirima NP, which was stunning. Also had a look at Ivanhoe Crossing, but couldn't take The Beast across as it had been closed due to a release of water from Diversion Dam. Enjoyed some time at Lake Kununurra, looked for freshwater crocs but we still haven't seen a croc in the wild. Smiley had a go at crabbing and fishing, no luck with that but he caught the attention of quite a few local Aboriginal kids who followed him around to watch what he was up to...a very cute posse!
I also convinced Smiley to take me to have a look at the local rock at Argyle Fine Diamonds. Picked out a pretty little trinket, can't understand why he didn't buy it for me, it was only $64000! I mean, if I was high-maintenance I would have picked the pink diamond worth $105000! Never mind, no room for souvenirs anyway.
Went out the road 100 km's to visit Wyndham and have a look at Five Rivers Lookout. The drive up to the lookout was incredibly steep but the view was spectacular! Some silly b***** had lit a bushfire though, so it was a bit hazy for photos. Wyndham is a bit of a one-horse town, the only thing worth stopping for was The Big Croc. We tried to spot some real crocs there, but they were nowhere to be seen. We did find a beautiful swimming spot about 20 kms out of Wyndham called The Grotto. It's at the bottom of a chasm and is accessed by 140 man made concrete and rock steps. Unbelievable track, it would have been a super-human feat to construct it! We decided not to swim there as the water was absolutely freezing. Locals estimate the depth to be 150 m, however they say that the bottom has never been reached.
Had a look at a game of footy today, some very fast and athletic Aboriginal players, really great to watch. It was nice to watch the footy in shorts and singlet, rather than scarf and beanie! Was a bit colder today though, only 27 degrees! Perfect!
Tomorrow we head towards Halls Creek, so will be out of Internet/phone range until we hit Broome in a few days.
