Waved goodbye to beautiful Kununurra and set off towards Halls Creek, about 300 km's away. Had a quite eventful drive, through a burn off which was very close to the road and somewhat out of control, with smoldering trees right at the roadside. Got through that, then discovered that there were stray cattle everywhere for the next 100 km's or so. They just wandered out onto the road as they pleased and you have no choice but to slow right down and let them go (unless you are a road train driver, then it's cow bowling time!)
Made it to Halls Creek mid afternoon and decided to go out to Old Halls Creek to camp the night. Well, to say Old Halls Creek is a one-horse town wouldn't be quite right as even the horse had moved out! There was nothing but a very shabby cattle station and a campground but we decided the experience would be worth it. Had a look around the town and at the old cemetery there, that took about 10 minutes, then we had a feed and an early night. It was so quiet there, had a great sleep!
Woke early the next morning and set off for Fitzroy Crossing, about 300 km's away. Had a nice drive through some incredible mountain range scenery and arrived at Fitzroy River Lodge early arvo. Set up camp and took off for a bit of a look at Fitzroy Crossing. Weather was nice and warm, about 30 degrees during the day, but dropping to about 10 overnight.
Went for a drive to Geikie Gorge NP which was lovely. Took a walk along the riverbed, bit too hot to go far though and the trek through deep sand was hard-going. Really wanted to launch the tinny here, however due to boating restrictions were only allowed to put it in the water between 12 and 1 pm and the boat ramp was incredibly steep so decided it would be easier to give up on that idea. We had seen quite a fair bit of the gorge on our walk anyway, so decided to go searching for freshwater crocs along the riverbed instead. No luck there, still haven't seen a freshie or a saltie in the wild! C'mon crocs, where the bloody hell are ya?
Spent the afternoon relaxing by the pool, soaking up the sun and planning our next stop in Derby.
