Hi all. We have had an epic few days, doing 1500 km's since leaving Broome on Wednesday morning! Tired and grumpy and in desperate need of chocolate!
Our first day was a very hot drive from Broome to a beautiful free-camp area named Mary Pool, about 100 km's from Halls Creek. Some of the free camps in WA and NT have been in fabulous locations, but I think Mary Pool was the best we have come across. It is located next to a river, has heaps of trees for shade, is about 500 metres off the main highway and campfires are allowed. Obviously we weren't the only ones there, the place was packed - apparently some nights they squeeze up to 100 vans in there! Anyway, we had lots of people to chat to and we had the biggest roaring campfire of the lot!
Next day we were up and off towards Lake Argyle. After another long drive we arrived and got set up in time for sunset. Our site was a ripper - situated on the edge of the park with the valley sloping down below. Heaps of beautiful birds flying around our camper and we were lucky enough to get a visit from a baby owl while we were outside eating dinner...bit special. We loved this place so decided to have 2 nights here. Spent the next day having a look around Lake Argyle and the Ord River, also went to the Durack Homestead Museum for a look. Also had to take advantage of the caravan park pool with the most stunning view over the lake, crikey the water was cold though! The day was capped off nicely by happy hour by the bar as the sun went down, ah the serenity!
So the plan for today was to drive only about 300 km's to Victoria River Station. Smiley was feeling good when we got to Vic River so we had some burgers for lunch. I had a yummy Barramundi burger and Adz fulfilled another dream of trying new dead animals with his Buffalo burger. He loved it, but I wasn't that keen. I found that the buffalo had quite a strong taste and was really heavy and gamey. So we left there as full as googs and made our way towards Katherine. Found a great little caravan park at Manbulloo Homestead, about 10 km's from Katherine, so we are settled in for the night and will be heading for The Mango Farm at Daly River tomorrow. We should finally get to see a croc!
