Wow the rest of this week has gone extremely quickly, I can't believe it! My time on wednesday was mainly split between babysitting classes, there are a lot of absent teachers at the moment for some reason, and playing lego with the smaller ones. I feel a lot like a bouncer when I am sitting in on classes since its pretty hard keeping them all in one place! I also feel like I have been the butt of quite a lot of jokes since when the kids talk amongst themselves it is very difficult to pick up what they are saying! Thursday I was left with similar tasks except I was also asked to help the sixth formers who are planning to sit their toefl exams(english as a foreign language) there are three of them Axel, Iziar and Ayslen and Richard and I take the class. Its probably the most enjoyable thing I have done so far at the school since it feels like proper teaching! We set them a short essay and then discussed their answers as a group. I had to mark their essays this morning which felt a bit weird! The other thing that happened on thursday was I gave some of the year 8s a talk on my old warwick school uniform since they are doing a project on something to do with that. They were amazed when I told them about the marshall and about all the perks of being a school prefect! In the evening I went with panchito and pablo (the father and son from my family) to have pizza and then go see Terminator at the cinema. They do a really weird thing with their pizza here where they put a slice of I think maize on top of the pizza slice which makes it like a pizza sandwich, quite nice but super filling! The film itself was pretty good although I was struggling a little since looking after those kids all day is really tiring!
In the afternoon I played lego with a group of little girls and when I went around the circle asking them to introduce themselves one of the the girls replied "me llamo bla bla soy china" which means my name is bla bla and im chinese. Im not sure she counted on me calling her bla bla for the rest of the day though! After that I went to play sports with the older kids, which was great since I got to play touch for 2 hours. I also met one of the rugby coaches Yeti, an important man to know since he owns one of the main bars around here!
In the evening Richard, Alan, Ashley(another intern) and Freddy the son of Marcela who owns the school went out for a few drinks at Yeti's bar, which was really nice.
Today was filled with lots of odd-jobs from making magic wands to doing a poster on cockney rhyming slang! The rhyming slang caused much confusion, but I think they got it in the end! I also had to babysit a year 6 class and it was the first time I've had to be a real badass to the kids. First of all they were trying it on saying it was their break time, something they quickly retracted when I called their bluff and pretended to go and ask another teacher! Then I couldn't get them to sit down despite telling them all a million times so I said "the next person out of their seat has to sign" signing being a punishment here, although I still don't fully understand what it actually is! I also had my usual lego play time, followed by more toefl, today we did essay plans and oral discussions of various topics in the book. The other thing of interest that happened today was the celebration of "día de la bandera" literally "flag day" where they celebrate the death of the guy who designed their flag. There was a big assembly and they sang the national anthem and gave various presentations on the history of it all, which was very interesting.
