During our night in Magnetic Islands we headed to the bar for a drink and ended up meeting someone from Hervey Bay and played a few drinking games with the Americans next to us, so a quick drink turned into rather a messy night! In order to win a bar tab Sam entered an amateur lap dance competetion which probably turned 1 poor girl into a nun-but it was very funny to watch as you will see when you look at the photos! They also had flip-flop throwing comps and other Aussie things to celebrate Australia day. Magnetic Island is very small with a few ok beaches-i thikn 1 night was enough time to spend there!
On the way to Cairns we stopped off at a Crocodile farm which was awesome!!!! We saw them feed all the crocs who were mostly agressive as all the females had just laid eggs, which made it even more interesting! Then we fed kangaroos (one of them had a joey poking out of her pouch!) and tree kangaroos which are very similar but just very very small! We also held a snake and a baby crocodile which had it's mouth sellotaped shut! They were selling croc meat pies too, but we decided that we would give that a miss!
In Cairns we're staying at Gilligan's hostel-it is the best one i have ever stayed in! The beds are massive, the bathrooms are spotless and it has 2 clubs, a pool, a waterfall and an outdoor bar! For our first night we went down to the Wool shed, and because we are OZ Experience passengers we could choose any meal for $6. We both had a steak and it massive and very very tasty-plus a jacket potato and veg! Imagine my delight! We also got heaps of free drinks and spent about a tenner between us the whole night!
Yesterday we had a lazy day looking round the shops and then had a free meal at the hostel which was very nice but no $6 steak! Today we went to the Great Barrier Reef which I was very excited about, but actually it was a bit disappointing. We paid a bit more to go with a company (Tusa) that goes to less visited sites so the reefs are meant to be less disturbed and more pristine. We went to 2 reefs-the first one we dived at, and most of the coral seemed to be brown and dead. We saw a few fish but nothing too exciting. The second site was a lot better; there were a lot more fish and it was a lot more colourful, but i expected it to be like Fiji but better, whereas actually it wasn't anywhere near as good as the snorkelling and diving we did there, just a lot more expensive. I'm glad we've seen it for ourselves though- I couldn't have left Australia without having a look.
Tonight we're going to the Wool shed again with some friends from the buses who I've just bumped into again-very excited about the steak!
We're staying in Cairns until the 6th now instead of the 1st. We were going to try and spend some more time in Darwin but to change it from a transfer to a stop over was quite expensive so we'll just be going straight to Bali. Not tomorrow buit the next day Sam is starting an open water diving course so he'll be able to dive without an instructor. On the 2nd I'm going to an Aboriginal centre for one of those days as it's one of the other things I wanted to do before we left Aus.
