It was a rather strange 3 days while Sam was away...Hervey Bay is a rather small and unexceptional place, so after spending a day on the beach and walking to the pier it seemed that I had seen everything there was to see. The hostel was pretty sociable, but as everyone had to be up at 6.30 there wasn't much partying going on and every day the whole hostel cleared out which was a bit eerie...it was nice in the early evenings though as everyone gathered round for a few drinks and card games, and someone even taught me to play poker! I was even given a free pizza on the second night as they ordered too much for their 'all you can dominos' evening...i wasn't complaining though. I think Sam had a good time on his trip...the photos looked amazing and they had pretty good weather, but he says that he was stuck with a load of rude Germans which wasn't so much fun. I must say it was very nice to have him back again!
We are now in the town of 1770 which is a compulsory stop on our bus, which seems rather strange as it is a very very small place with not a lot to do-but this is where Captain Cook landed in 1770, hence the name, so i guess it's a pretty historical place if you have the time to look around (we don't as we're heading off tomorrow to a cattle station which is included in our bus pass-it looks quite good fun!).
It's boiling where we are at the moment (as i typed that it started pouring down, which somehow makes it seem warmer)-everything is a effort and it's constantly muggy...i said to our recptionist that t's so much warmer here than in New South Wales and he said that was like comparing the UK to Thailand as Queensland is so much closer to the equator.
We've booked our buses up to Cairns where we should arrive on the 29th Jan and stay for a few nights before flying to Darwin (again staying for a few nights) and then to Bali.I'm very much looking forward to Bali and Thailand-Australia is lovely but after spending nearly two months here it's starting to get a tad samey, in that every place is lovely but very similar to the last. There also doesn't seem to be an awful lot of culture here (well none that is different from ours!)-Apparently the aborigine population is less than 2% of Aus and generally ignored-I'm hoping that we might get to learn a bit more about it in the Northern Territory but I've been raeding a Bill Bryson book called 'Down Under' and it seems that this may not be the case which is quite sad.
