We are in Canada! We had a lovely week in Antigua before arriving in which we ate far too much (including lobster - Sam hasn't done himself any favours by giving me a taste for it!), drank too many cocktails, sunbathed and just chilled out in general. We even saw Orlando Bloom at the airport who is possibly the skinniest man I have ever seen. We arrived in Ottawa very late on my birthday and had a nice scenic drive - we saw the canal and all of the parliamentary buildings lit up. We had all of Sunday to wander around Ottawa and get a feel for the place - it's very lovely here!
It's been a bit of a whirlwind since then - we've both started at work and spent the evenings trying to get settled in. We were taking the transit to work which is a bus that runs along an exclusive road so it avoids all the traffic - it's a fab way to get around and although we haven't yet mastered it we're getting there! We have a hire car at the moment as we aren't allowed to buy or lease a car until we have our ID cards which was very handy for getting essentials like a tv! This is the first time that I've driven on the wrong side of the road and the first time that I've driven an automatic so it was a bit tricky to start with - I thought I'd got the hang of it until I did a right turn and started driving down what the Canadians think is the wrong side of the road....oops. Sam seemed to pick it up straight away just to annoy me. The people here are absolutely lovely - everyone from 'wrong numbers' to shop assistants make an effort to speak to us which is somewhat different to strangers at home!
We love our house - it feels so strange to have so much space after our diddy little flat in Cheltenham but I'm sure it will feel more normal once our shipping containers arrive and we can fill the place with our junk! We got hooked up to the internet and a phone line today and the place feels weirdly homely.
I'm hoping to start playing with the Ottawa netball team next Tuesday and am trying to convince Sam to come along (he's too cool) which should be good fun! We went to the work bar on Friday for a drink after work and went back to some new friends house for pizza and wine which was lovely! Other than that there's not much to report - we're still learning a lot about the city so will probably spend the next few weeks exploring and finding our feet. We've been missing home a lot and it's not the same here without friends and family, but fingers crossed we'll have lots of visitors!
