Today we traveled further south to Wadi Rum, the true deserts of Southern Jordan. Lawrence of Arabia lived part of his life in this beautiful desert, writing parts of his book while living in a house made out of a giant rock. We visited a couple springs and his house - I have no idea how someone could survive like this, he must have really roughed it out. We had a tour guide take us in a 4-wheeled Land Rover through the desert, stopping at special sites such as I mentioned above as well as places where the Nebatean's had writings and pictures drawn onto the rock. As we are in the Middle East, it was only natural that we took a short break in the middle of the desert to make some tea for tea time.
The desert sand is amazing!! I played in it like a two-year old! =] On our way back we saw a Beduin man with his camel and asked if we could ride it just enough to take a picture, he gladly agreed and didn't want to take any money for it, but we gave a him a little anyway. The camel was about 3 years old, still fairly large, and not so happy about sitting down for us to climb on top. I want a camel now! They go for about $3000-$5000 depending on the gender.
Now we are in Aqaba for a night or two. It's a port city on the Red Sea and full of night-life, in comparison to the other places in Jordan we have visited. There are long strips that remind me so much of Santa Monica Beach, California. This is the second closest (the first being a mall and hookah lounge in Amman) to feeling like I'm back in America so far on this trip. You can see Israel from here.
