Sallys Worldwide Adventure
Arrived into Christchurch on the 20th July. Me and Sophie had booked to do the Kiwi Experience bus, which will take us around both the North and the South Islands, stopping at all the good places. Its really cool as all the drivers are friendly and get to meet aload of people of the bus, and every thing is organised for you!
Only spent an afternoon in christchurch and then next morning we joined the bus and drove to Westport. Along the way we stopped at a really pretty lake that was all frozen over and it was snowing, really pretty. Then a place called Reefton where we met 2 old gold miners that were showing us there collection of gold! When we got to westport it quite late already so we just went to the beach and watched sunset, then there was a camp fire on the beach but it was far to cold for us, so we watched a DVD at the hostel instead.
Then next day we drove to Lake Mahinapua. Along the way we stopped at a few places.
Cape Foulwind, which is New Zealands closest point to Australia.
Pumakaki, looked at what are called the pancake rocks, because they aparently look like a stack of pancakes.
We also stopped off at a town to buy fancy dress costumes for party that night. As you can see by the photos we looked awful!! We decided we'd all go as the same thing and dressed up as Punks! The theme for the party was anything begining with P.
From Lake Mahinapua we drove to Franz Josef only stopped at one place along the way which was a Bushmans Centre, where basically we were just shown a video of deer Hunting, so I didnt enjoy that! Did get to fed this massive black wild pig thou, which was cool!
The next day was my birthday!! And me and Sohie had planned to treat ourselves to a HeliHike up the Glacier, instead of doing a full day walking hike like most of the others. Was really touch and go thou, as the weather was really bad the day before and they didnt fly. Luckerly we had a really clear day and managed to get up there. The helicopter ride was wicked. I'd never been in a heli before, really weird when it takes of it leans forward slightly and then when it turns your stomack goes! Really cool, got some well amazing photos. Had a Senic flight for about 15 mins looking around the glacier. We then landed on the glacier and hiked around for 2 hours looking at all the cravices and ice pools. Had to wear walking boats with tallons attached to them to help us stop falling over. I didnt fall but I did slip a few times! Had a really good birthday, every one was so nice and thoughtful, we went out for a meal that night and they had got me card and stuff.
From Franz Josef we drove to lake Wanaka. Along the way we stopped at a lake called Lake matheson, which was cool. The water is so clear and all the snow topped mountains reflect in the water really clearly, and looks really amazing.
Then we and Sophie decided to be spontaneous and do a SkyDive! We had planned to do one at some point, but decided best to do it as soon as to get it over and done with so we could stop worrying about it. It was wicked thou, one of the best things I have ever done, and suprisgling not that scary. We jumped from 12,000 feet with a 45 second free fall and 120 mph down to 4000 feet and then 20mph to the ground. I was so scared on the way to the skydive place and getting ready, but as soon as I was in the plane I was kinda like well i gotta do it now. The free fall goes so quick, and you cant here a thing but the air rushing past you, and then the paracute goes up and it feels like you shot upwards, and then everything goes so quiet and peacful. We done it at sunset so had some really wicked views of the mountains! Defo recommend it!
Lake Wanaka to Queenstown. We stopped at a place called puzzeling world, which was so cool, all this illusion rooms, and stuff. There was a room that was slanted and down hill was really up hill and then a room that was taller one side than the other so people in one corner looked like giants and in the other were midgets. There was also a maze, but I didnt complete it as I slipped on the ice in my excitment and cut my finger and had to use the emergancy exit! :(
Queenstown is a really cool place with loads to do in the day and at night! We went Skiing which was wicked, although I wasnt very good at it. We had 2 lessons for beginners so I sort of know what I am meant to be doing but doing it was another thing! Also went up the gondala which is a cable car up the mountain and went on ludges which are like little go carts and watch some of the others do Budgy jumps. We also done a day trip to a place called Milford sound and went on a boat cruise along the river.
On my last day in the South Island we were in Kaikoura, and I went swimming with the dolphins. Was really amazing, the water was freezing but it was so worth it!! Didnt get to touch any of them but it was so cool just jumping off the boat into a pod of dolpins then swimming along with them. At times it was pretty scary as they just swim up from underneath you! When we first got there there was about 250 but when we left they reckon there were 400!
