Extra ordinary beach day.
Today we drove to the hot springs beach on the Coromandel penninsula.
We heard that you could dig a hole on the beach that fills with hot spring water so we decided to go and see what it was like before we hired our spade.
It was really entertaining! Clearly you need to get there very early to bag your space as the area of hot spring activity is quite small and the tide timing is important. The funny thing was the tide was coming in and people were madly trying to build up their sand defences to stop the waves slopping into their hot pools. Of course as the waves came in the hot spa water washed away and people were just sitting in sandpits!
The best bit was that we found if you stood in the shallow waves and buried your feet under the sand- the sand was really hot and the sea - well usual sea stuff- never really warm.
We moved on up the coast and took a ferry across some water to a peninsula- We found a small town and had a great sea food lunch then back on the ferry (would have taken about 5 minutes to walk the distance but obviousley we can't do that).
On the way back we decided to go to another beach that we had heard required 'a walk through a forest' to get to. How lovely. The beach was completely deserted and very beautiful with sand dunes to shelter in. We got a bit lost going back and must have taken us half an hour through the forest as well as 15 minutes tough beach walking. We are fitter than we look!
