We arrive in Sao Paulo at about one and try and find the bus company that will take us to Paraty at four. Not being able to find the company that we've found on the internet we then proceed to ask every company that is there if they go to Paraty, to no avail! Right so there must be another terminal that goes to Paraty as all the ones in our terminal seem to be going south, however no one speaks any English. About half hour passes of us wondering around trying to find some indication of how to get somewhere that will take us to Paraty. We can't find any wifi or Internet cafes either so the feeling of we're f***ed starts to set in. Finally I ask a guy that looks like he works at the bus terminal, he can't speak English but he takes us to someone who can kind of understand us and semi communicate. He takes us down to the metro and keeps saying 'Portuguese tiete'. After about a minute of looking confused the situation turns quite awkward and we follow where he's pointing to pretending we know exactly what's going on. Wonder, wonder, wonder and the situation hasn't changed, we still have no idea. By this point it seems the scumbags have caught on we're lost and seem to circle like vultures. So I go back into the terminal with my tail between my legs and find the guy again. Luckily this time he's with a fully English speaking woman and she explains that the tiete is a metro stop we have to get off at where the other terminal is. Bang on, however I do make her write down the stop to confirm, by this time everyone seems to be rolling their eyes and I get the 'f***ing foreigner' vibe, not for the first time on this trip I may add.
We jump on the metro and get off at the right stop no worries. We've got about an hour until the coach leaves, we find the company and... Shock horror they have no seats left. The next available coach is four the next day so we book it up and head to the Internet cafe to find a hostel. We find the 3 dogs hostel close by.
We used our last five reals on the Internet so now we needed a bank to get money out for the metro. Hick up number then canes into play, my card doesn't seem to be working. I try about five different machines and then ring up the bank again to give them a b******ing. After a short but abrupt conversation with the gentleman from the bank he assures me that my card isn't blocked. I hang up on him and try again, honestly about the tenth machine finally accepts my card while I accept the fact that the bank are right.
We then jump on the metro and get to our hostel. By this time its tipping it down and we arrive looking like drowned rats. The hostels pretty s*** so we head out to grab some food and hit a bar for an hour or so. We buy a create from the supermarket and head back to the hostel and drink until about mid night when we go to bed. The next morning we get up and mooch around the hostel waiting to get our bus to Paraty. We head to the bus station nice and early at 2 and all runs smoothly.
