We're in Melbourne and really enjoying ourselves. Our latest update is...........
Well, first i'll finish Adelaide update! We spent our last days sight seeing in Adelaide. On saturday, we enjoyed the Christmas Pageant which was huge. There were 320,000 people watching in total so, as you can imagine, it was massive but what an atmosphere. There were 58 floats in total and all were pretty colours. There were clowns, brass bands, dancers and best of all Santa was on the last float, which everyone mad for, so it was a great morning! We visited the Art Gallery in the afternoon which was really good. It had a real diverse range of exhibits from old to contemporary so was interesting!
On sunday, we visited the Migration Museum, the sunday markets, and walked along the river. Our bus wasn't until 8pm so we could enjoy the whole day which was good. We were sorta sad to leave Adelaide in the end as it had grown on us as it had such a nice feel.
Well, the bus journey wasn't too bad. It was over night so we did manage to get some sleep but we still felt drained when we got to Melbourne. The best thing about the trip was that the bus wasn't too full so we could spread out and have 2 seats each so we could get a bit comfier! Once in Melbourne, at 6am, we got a taxi to our hostel which took longer than it should have done because the driver didn't have a clue where the YHA hostel was but hey we made it.
The hostel is again really nice, we've got a double room on the 2nd floor with a nice view of the city which is a nice change. It isn't ensuite but the bathrooms are really close and there's lots of them so it's all good!
We spent yesterday exploring the city, did some shopping and we watched the Melbourne Cup parade. This parade was at 12pm and it was a procession of the winning horses from past years, the trainers and jockeys for this years runner and some bands so it was good to watch. We then had a smoothie and shopped which, as you can imagine, was great! Melbourne is known as Australia's shopping capital and we now know why. It's also known as the trendy part of Australia so I'm really at home here!
Today was the big Melbourne Cup day and the city has been bustling and excited. There were lots of lovely dressed women this morning on the way to races so I had a great time people watching in Starbucks. We then watched the big race in Federation Square on a big screen which was heaving! Unfortunately we didn't win anything as our horses came near the end. We think Chris' horse came last - bless! It was great fun though so we're glad we were here to enjoy it all! The weather is pretty cold here so we've got trousers back on and cardigans but there were some groups of people who had dressed up in federation square in lovely little dresses but boy did they look cold. Is it worth it? Me thinks not!
Well, we've sorted out our car hire for thursday and Friday so we're off on a big adventure on the Great Ocean Road. We've booked a night's stay in a YHA hostel in Port Fairy and in total it's about 5hours drive there and then the same on the next day so it's not too bad. Will be nice having the independence! We're then coming back to Melbourne on Friday night and staying until next thursday so we've got lots of time to enjoy this fantastic city.
