We're in Adelaide and enjoying ourselves! Our latest update is below;
Tuesday was spent shopping as I definitely had lots of retail therapy to catch up on. It was weird being back in a city again so it took a bit of getting used to! We went to Central Market which was really nice. Is was very tempting as there was lots of fruit, veg, cheese, bread, pasties and lots more on offer but we managed to resist!
Yesterday was spent on a wine tour in the Barossa Valley. We were picked up at 8.30am by our tour guide and we drove to the Valley which took about 1.5hours. Our first stop was at one of the big attractions, The World's Biggest Rocking Horse. We were able to climb to the top which was fun and then we had a wander around the lovely toy factory behind it. We really did feel like children again!
We then had our first taste of wine at Wolf Blass which was a big winery. We tasted a sparkling white, numerous sweet whites, red wines and then finished with ports and sweet wines. Chris fel in love with the port so I treated him. We're actually going to enjoy it with some cheese tonight. How civilised for backpackers!
We had a lovely 3 course lunch at The Vine Inn where Chris tried kangaroo steak followed by his favourite dessert, sticky toffee pudding. Then it was time for more wine tasting at our next stop, Vine Crest. This was a small family boutique winery which was really nice. We got to try a real range of the whites, reds and ports which were all nice!
Our third stop of the day was at Grant Burge winery which was another enjoyable experience. We got to choose the wines we wanted to taste, rather than it being structured, so we just concentrated on the white wines. We teasted 5 different varieties, which were all nice, but one stood our for me. This became my treat of the day!
We had a break from wine tasting and were driven to the lookout over the valley which was a good photo spot. It was great to see how big the vieyards were and how big the valley was from the birds eye view.
Our final wine tasting was at Kies which was a lovely finish. Again, we got to choose our wines but we tried a whole range from dry whites to reds and then finishing with sweeted whites and ports. This winery had a fantastic un-wooded red wine which we fell in love with and yes you guessed it, we bought a bottle to enjoy with a steak sometime! Yummy! Another great experience here was the port slush. This had turned to slush because it had been put in the freezer and because the alcohol doesn't freeze but the water does you are left with a slush consistency. It certainly had a kick to it and was a bit of fun!
To end the day we stopped at the Whispering Wall which was good. It was literally a concrete wall that you could whisper along and be heard at the other end 150m away. Rather unique!
It was a good day yesterday that's for sure. We're certainly getting into these wine tours!
Well, today has been another packed day as we went on a walk of the city with my tour guide, Chris. We followed a walk in the Lonely Planet guide and saw a few of the sites of Adelaide including the South Australia Museum. The weather was a bit overcast so we saved some of the walk to do on Saturday in better weather. We had a wander around the shops, had our packed lunch and then wandered to the Botanic Gardens this afternoon which are beautiful. We had a lovely romantic stroll for about 2hours which we really enjoyed.
Our next few days are going to be busy as we are going on a tour of Haigh's Chocolate Factory tomorrow morning and then we're getting the tram to Glenelg. It's a small town by the sea which is supposed to be lovely so we're looking forward to it. Part of the excitement is for the fish and chips we're going to have on the front - yum yum!
Our plan for Saturday is to watch the Christmas Pageant through the city which is going to be big. Apparently it's lots of floats and bands which parade through the city in the morning. Apparently it's the biggest in the world! We're looking forward to that and then we're going to visit the Migration Museum and Art Gallery in the afternoon.
We've now decided to leave Adelaide on Sunday as the Melbourne Cup is on on Tuesday and we want to be in Melbourne to really enjoy it so we're getting the bus at 8pm on Sunday which arrives in Melbourne at 6am. Oh joy!
Welll, that's it from us. As you can tell, we're still really enjoying ourselves!
