C'est moi, Chalsey. Arrived in Malawi yesterday. Had a charming welcome getting out of the chapa here in Lilongwe as some'friendly' locals frisked me before unzipping the side pockets of my bag as I was putting my big backpack on and made off with a handful of my crayons... good thing I didn't have my wallet in there! Our 10am bus departed at 12 from Lusaka (but that's quite normal) and we arrived in Chipata (The border town in Zambia) around 9pm. Stayed in some nice dorms there before catching a taxi to the border and then the beloved chapa (complete with a few squaking chickens) to the capital. Food is slightly more expensive here as we're paying an average of $6 per meal -- which is still fairly cheap compared to home.
Had a wonderful 9 days in Zambia. Victoria Falls met and exceeded all of our expectations... as we couldn't even see the bottom due to all the mist. Got completely soaked.. the mist was rising up from the falls so it was sort of like reverse rain. Went on a hike to the bottom of the falls... where the trail occasionally turned into the stream. Got ambushed by some baboons who lost interest in us when they realized we had no food for them. Finally went on our much anticipated booze cruise which was everything we hoped it would be... saw some hippos and a croc -- altho they all look like floating sticks on my camera. Vaguely remember the sunset... went to a bar after that and met up with some friends we made at our hostel. Ended up staying an extra night as we slept in and missed our bus the next day.
The weather is slightly colder here... 23 degrees brrr. We're planning on heading to Blantyre in the next couple days to check out Open Arms Malawi... not sure that we can volunteer there but were told we could get a tour and an orientation of the work they do there. After that heading to Nkhata Bay on the coast of Lake Malawi if we can set up some volunteer work there. Can't think of anything else... have a weird growth on my arm I think may be a fungus. Haven't thot of a name for it yet, hopefully I'll find a pharmacy before I become too attached to it. Hope everyone's doing well! Take care,
SAC
