In the afternoon we headed into the Old Town of Cartagena to have a look around. The Old Town is beautiful and very different to the rest of the city - it is surrounded by Las Murallas, the thick walls built to protect it against enemies which took 2 centuries to complete due to repeated damage from both storms and pirate attacks! It is full of colourful little buildings with lots of character and pretty vines and flowers growing all around. There are lots of squares/plazas, shops, restaurants and churches. We walked along the top of the wall and came across loads (maybe hundreds...) of people all flying kites by the sea. We spent the rest of the afternoon wandering around and soaking up the atmosphere before heading back to our hostel for dinner.
