We quickly realised we had less time to get to Cuzco than we thought so a quick 3day stop in Arequipa was all we could manage.
A very chilled out and pretty city, where we went to an amazing museum about a girl called Juanita, the Ice Princess is kept. Very spooky as she is still frozen inside a glass cabinet. She was sacrificed, aged only 13, due to being pure, to satisfy and calm the Gods as there was really bad rain fall. She first had to walk for about 3weeks to the top of the highest mountain, before being given an hallucinagenic drink and smashed round the head. She was found after the volcano next to the mountain erupted in the early 90´s which melted the snow and ice around her and revealed her. Offerings of fabric, ceramics and gold were also found.
A little bit of history there for you all!
We also visited a Monastry, which was home to 200 nuns, tradition used to be that the 3rd child from a rich family had to go into the Monastry, kept completely seperate from the outside world. It was like a city in a city, beautiful!
Hannah decided it would be a good idea to do yet another trek, so eventually i was persuaded, but it was only for 2days this time.
Colca Canyon is one of the deepest in the world! We trekked down into it on day one, opting for the longer 6hour route rather than 3hours, that was a great idea! We got to camp to find a swimming pool and people chilling around it that had opted for the 3hour route! But we were lucky enough to see Condors and some amazing views (another moment that makes you feel very small in the world)
Getting out of the canyon on day 2 was extremely difficult, 2 & a half hours straight up! Made more difficult by the sole on Hannahs shoe breaking completely on the way to camp on day 1. It was now being held together, very stylishly, by duck tape lol. Hence the title photo of Hannahs very lovely sweaty back!
On the way back to the town we stopped off at some amazing hot springs, just what was needed at that time!
