Day 6 we departed Amarillo TX and said goodbye to the Cadillac Ranch. Our first stop was the halfway point for the route....Adrian TX at the Midpoint Cafe. We then cruised down an older alignment and hit a dead end that snuck up on us really quick.
Crossed over to NM the Route 66 way though Glenrio a ghost town at the border. Our travel book advised against the old alignment crossing but since it has not rained in a while the road was ok. I was very happy. I did not want to relive the stress like the Jerico Gap the day before. :) As we proceeded on the gravel alignment until we hit San Jon NM. We saw a dead rattlesnake and a mule deer as well as a truck pulling a camper. This was the first time we had seen another route adventurer on one of the gravel alignments.
Next stop was Tucumcari NM. We stopped at the TeePee Curios store and purchased a postcard for 27 cents! Yep you read it right 27 cents! Awesome find! I will be making a magnet with the postcard when I get home.
Back on to the old alignment we went through a single lane culvert tunnel under I-40.
Today was a big train day as well and boy did we get a lot of pictures! I also got A LOT of NM terrain pictures. We are all finding the terrain interesting and figure the backdrop for the movie Cars was definitely taken a lot from this area.
Next stop the Route 66 car museum in Santa Rosa NM. There were a lot of cars that John would like us to buy. :)
Ate late lunch/early dinner at the Standard Cafe in Albuquerque. It was one of the diners on the Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives show and our meal was really good.
To round out our day we were going to stay in Grants but decided to push through to Gallup to be closer to the AZ border. One last exciting thing for us today was the change to Mountain Time, gaining an hour for our travels today.
For day 7 we are planning to make our way through AZ.
