I apologize for slacking and not updating my blog for day 7, but I have some really good notes for each day of our trip so I am doing my blog now. :)
We began our day leaving Kingman AZ and getting stuck at a train crossing and John was thrilled! ThR train had 3 engines. Basically all of the trains that we have seen have had 3 engines.
We miandered our way out of NM and into AZ. We traveled an old gravel alignment of 66 before getting to the Painted Desert/Petrified Forest National Park. It was a very interstices side trip with some great scenery and a chance to get in a lesson on how the trees became 'petrified'. We stopped several times on the 20+ mile route through the park, including a walk through the Crystal Forest where we saw a lot of different pieces of wood and we took a bunch of pics of course. :) We found out during the intro movie we watched that 1 ton of petrified wood is removed from the park each month. A ranger told us a family was caught with 400 pounds in their car and that another group had cut the fence on the edge of the park and was loading up their pick-up. Very sad to hear.
Holbrook AZ was our next destination and as we were passing through we saw the last of the two wig wam motels that still exist on 66. We then had a quick stop at the Jackrabbit Trading Post and had our picture taken in the jackrabbit and saw the famous "Here is is!" sign.
On to Winslow. Made a quick stop at a remembrance park for 9/11. They have a couple of beams that were recovered on display. We then made a stop at the infamous 'Corner in Winslow Arizona' that was made famous by the Eagles song 'Take it Easy'. We got a few nice pictures of the corner and a mural that is painted on a building on the corner.
We tried a quick stop at Meteor City to see the infamous meteor site but due to cost and time, we will need to visit the meteor sight on our next trip to AZ.
Traveled another gravel alignment that was located on personal property and it took us to the highest point on 66, 7000+ feet. Encountered interesting weather. Temps fluctuated between 68 and 88 and we saw some rain.
Traveled through another town we will be coming beck to visit, Williams AZ. Williams is the location of the train that takes passengers to the Grand Canyon.
We drove the longest unbroken stretch of 66 that still remains.
Our day ended in Kingman AZ.
