We learnt very quickly that this kind of holiday is not for people who want to sleep in!! The organized tours start at around 8.30 so that means up by about 6.45 so breakfast isn't too rushed. On the breakfast subject, there is a full buffet which includes drag bread and rolls as well as cooked options. Hah hah soft boiled eggs are NOT soft boiled! There is also an omelette station where the chef cooks to your order. I watched very carefully, determined to improve my home omelettes!
Today we are going on a tour to Weltenberg Abbey which dates back to 620 AD. We drove through the village of Regensberg to a cruise which took us deep into the woods of Germany. The countryside was beautiful with the changing leaves of fall adding the the sheer limestone cliffs. Got quite cold and when we landed at the abbey started to lightly rain. Had about a ten minute walk then came to an active abbey. There are currently 23 Benedictine monks there with an average age of 45. Apparently no shortage of men entering the service.
The actual abbey was unbelievably beautiful. Given that it was built in the baroque style (must remember to blog about architectural styles) which is very ornate, the guide gave us an understanding of the symbolism and meaning of the sculptures and frescoes. Ross got some fabulous photos, and as far a churches went, we were both moved by this one very much. Possibly also motivated by the fact that is was quite miserable outside and we were getting a beer and pretzel!! That's one way get people to church I guess ...
The bus tour back went past the house where the current pope lived with his brother for the twenty or so years before moving house to the Vatican!!
We didn't go into Regensberg this afternoon ... I slept and Ross "bonded" with fellow passengers!
