First off, apologies for getting so behind on blog entries- I have been very busy!We have the weekends free at this volunteer project so I spent saturday doing some more sightseeing in Hanoi. In the morning we visited Ho Chi Minh's mausoleum. Ho Chi Minh is considered the national hero of Vietnam, and there were a great number of vietnamese queuing to pay their respects. It was a very organised and high security set up, with armed guards everywhere, but we finally got into the mausoleum and saw the preserved Uncle Ho looking very peaceful. It was a very calming and interesting experience, but it was marred slightly by our treatment as foreigners. There were separate queues for Vietnamese and foreigners- which were actually sign posted! The Vietnamese got in free, whereas we has to pay a total of 30000d for entry to the mausoleum and visitor complex! I couldn't believe how cheeky this was- blatant racism! We asked the ticket lady why we had to pay just to walk through the complex, which incidentally was the only way out, but she kept aggressively shouting 'TICKET!' at us in a very high pitched voice! We paid as it only amounted to about $2.5, but we were so cross we decided not to say thank you to her as we passed through- such a British thing to do, completely ineffective! We found a cheap Italian restaurant for lunch; I had lasagne, which was surprisingly tasty! It was nice to have a break from rice!I had to use an ATM for the first time- I withdrew 2000000d and became a millionaire (kind of)!In the afternoon we visited an amazing ice cream parlour called Fanny Ice cream! They had every flavour you could think of, even green tea! Yum yum :)
