Day 6 (6/10/11):
The funny thing about our apartment is that walking up the street to get to it, you think the street is so quiet! There really aren't very many people around, and it's not a main street that a lot of cars drive down (although the parking jobs up the street are hysterical! I wish I could just drive onto a sidewalk and leave my car crooked, half in the street!). As soon as we open the windows to our apt, though, it is SO noisy! Trash trucks emptying bins every hour (do they really need to do that?!), cars slamming on their horns, sirens every few minutes... Needless to say, I didn't get the best night's sleep last night.
I decided to give up on sleeping and pack my bag for the weekend and go for a quick run around the area. I brought my map with me so I wouldn't get lost :o) What a great thing to do! I saw the Colosseum, Terme di Caracalla, San Giovanni church, a track meet, and talked with an Italian man for a minute when I got a little turned around (yep... even with the map!). I felt like I should have brought my camera!
Later that morning, Jackie and I headed towards the Spanish steps for some sightseeing before class. We took turns climbing the stairs since we had our heavy bags for the weekend. What a cool view!! I even quickly stopped in the church at the top of the steps and a choir was singing. It was beautiful.
For lunch, we stopped at a restaurant in the posh neighborhood surrounding the Spancih steps. It's called Ristorante La Fontanella, and we both got homemade pasta dishes. Yum!!
We had to rush to class after lunch, bu ended up getting there right on time! Marlena had us do a quick review of the things we leaned that week, and then we took a small test! I didn't know we were getting pop quizzes here! ;o) Since Jackie, Donna (our new Australian friend), and I left during the break to catch a train to Sorrento, I didn't find out my test results right away. I think I did pretty good, though!
Sorrento is ABSOLUTELY worth going to! The commute to get there, though... could be better! The fast train was sold out, so we had a 3 hour train ride to Napoli, then an hour subway ride to Sorrento, then an hour cab ride to our hotel in Nettuno. We met some really nice locals along the way that spoke to us in Italian... I'm starting to pick up on more words, which is great!
The owner of the hostel was incredibly nice when we arrived. He took all our bags to our room, and directed us immediately upstairs to eat something in the restaurant. We all got the seafood risotto, and it was really amazing!! Of course, seafood on the coast must be delicious, right? When we got to our room after dinner, we were all SO excited!! It was huge, and clean, and even had 2 bedrooms and a separate kitchen!! Plus, there was hot water, which was amazing after not having it most of the week at our apartment. We felt so spoiled, and quickly got cleaned up and ready for bed to start the next day early and enjoy Sorrento!
