We'd originally planned to go to the capital of Texas, Austin, but we soon found out that half the population of El Paso had turned up to the station far in advance of the customary hour before departure, no doubt in order to sample the world famous music scene, and had taken all the nightbus tickets.
Rather than spend another night in the Mexican border town of El Paso, Dallas was the next best place to sample the heart of the Lone Star state, so we jumped on the next available old grey dog.
Dallas was a great choice for a place to spend a day before getting the night bus again for the second consecutive night, it turned out: with 'The Taste of Dallas' street festival luckily being on, showcasing local bands and restaurants; and the city being the infamous venue for the asassination of JFK.
We dumped our bags in the station lockers and then headed for the Sixth Floor Museum at the Dealey Plaza, where Lee Harvey Oswald picked off the President from the end window on 22nd November 1963. Everyone else had the same reason for coming to Dallas, it seemed, as the place was rammed and this made seeing all the various conspiracy theories slightly harder, though no less interesting. We then headed outside to check out the eerily familiar 'grassy knoll' and the exact spot that JFK was hit on Elm Street, marked with an X.
The rest of the day was spent at the street festival, sampling the various local fare and bands. Added bonus 'entertainment' came in the way of the local village idiot, who thought that he could fool the crowd, watching the bands on stage, into thinking that he was actually producing the music on a keyboard he was pretending to play. It might have worked, had he not kept pausing and holding the keyboard above his head with a deranged grin on his face.
Back to the station we then went, and headed off to New Orleans, not really knowing what to expect.
