Our five days spent in Brisbane were a welcome change to the many seaside towns in which we had spent the previous couple of weeks, mainly thanks to the hospitality of our hosts David and Michael Rankin and also to being back in the hustle and bustle of a city again.
Although we'd heard mixed reports from others about the city (and even from our host David), the weather, atmosphere and everything else made a great change from the beaches and hostels. The best thing, however, was the feeling of being at home with a full fridge, satellite tv and home cooking. Exactly what we needed; especially with us being able to watch the Oz version of Neighbours for the first time. Disappointingly, the Oz version is horrifically Americanised though, with even more cheese and a strange glossy lighting. The British version is much better; you're not missing much there.
Staying in Oxley, a couple of miles outside the city, we caught the train in each day and looked around the city and shops before returning and discussing all things Australia and watching any sport on offer. We were lucky enough to be treated to a meal in a local restaurant one night, where I sampled Barramundi for the first time; taken for coffee and a fantastic view of the city up Mount Coot-tha; we also got to know the family cat, Tigger, after his frequent attempts to join us in bed in the early hours of the morning.
On the final day we got to the Andy Warhol exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, showcasing his entire works, including the famous Campbell's soup cans and those Marilyn Monroe prints. A well spent afternoon; after which we thought we'd cook our hosts a farewell meal of Spaghetti Bolognaise, before catching the early morning Greyhound to Byron Bay the next day.
