The overnight bus to Townsville and Magnetic Island wasn't as good an idea as first seemed, with a bus being no substitute for the sleeper trains we had frequented in Asia. Stepping off the bus at the ferry terminal to take us to Magnetic Island at 5am, we eventually arrived at the hostel and had to wait until midday to catch up on our sleep. After this, our day got much better, however, as we spent the day sitting by the pool and exploring the beach in the 'sunniest place in Australia'.
The island itself was indeed a cracking place to take a camera, with great views of the beaches and bays. We weren't as able to explore the sea as everwhere else, however, as there's apparently a huge number of stingrays and jellyfish.
The island was a great place to relax and sit on the beach, which we proceeded to do for the next couple of days. The highlight of the island was the Koala Sanctuary, where we got some great pictures of the koalas, along with us holding pythons, baby crocodiles, lizards and cockatoos. The python encounter was a particularly unnerving experience, as you can imagine. On to Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays!
