We opted for the daytime bus to Airlie Beach which was a much better idea and we even got to watch a couple of films whilst we were travelling. Having arrived, we headed to Beaches hostel where we believed we'd made a reservation, only to find that internet bookings take 3 days so we hadn't allowed enough time and they were now full up. We considered the best idea was to go to the nearest tourist office and let them do the work for us, but the only thing they could find available was a spot on a caravan site out of town, which was fairly worrying. Undetered, we declined the offer and set about wandering up the strip to find that most places had just given the last room away minutes before. Our last hope was Magnums hostel which told us to try again in an hour for any cancellations. Fortunately, after a nervous wait, they were able to take us in and our moods perked up considerably.
It was an early start on our first day to catch the boat around the Whitsunday islands, but as we headed out to sea the clouds drew in and soon it was raining. Unable to lie on the beach at Daydream Island, we tagged onto a group viewing the feeding of the sealife which was well worth a watch. We were able to get close to stingrays, sharks and starfish and finally got to see Nemo.
The next stop was South Molle Island where the rain persisted, so we took a long walk up to the peak and the weather gave us a short break to admire the fantastic views. Having not quite used up all our energies, we became engrossed in skimming stones into the sea and I was able to take some pointers from the supposed expert.
The second morning started off with bright blue skies so we headed down to the lagoon with the crowds. After a short while we managed to bump into Caz & Joe, you wouldn't think Australia was bigger than Europe. Once again though, the clouds came and the sun was gone leaving it surprisingly cold.
Having been disappointed with the poor excuse for a kitchen at the hostel we took our supplies down to the public barbeques on the beach side and Kev cooked us steak, as usual, and shark which was interesting to try. Before long though we bumped into Caz & Joe again and spent the rest of the evening in the bar along with their friends.
It was an even earlier start on our third day to catch the boat to Whitehaven Beach, which is believed to be the second best beach in the World. We stopped to do some snorkelling which wasn't half as impressive as what we'd seen in Cairns but still fascinating. Luckily the sun came out for us at Whitehaven Beach so we were able to see it in it's full glory. I don't know about the World's second best beach, but it's definitely the nicest beach we've visited, and we've been to some lovely ones within the past 2 months. The sand is so white and so fine it's as if you're walking on flour.
